Description/Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men's Basketball Coach will lead all aspects of the men's basketball program. The coach is responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining student athletes; organizing and conducting practices; providing academic support; and preparing the team for competition. The position emphasizes promoting sportsmanship, academic achievement, and personal development while ensuring compliance with college policies and NJCAA regulations. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and competitive team environment aligned with the College's mission.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Supervise all activities related to the student athletes.
  • Provide academic, personal, and professional mentoring to student-athletes.
  • Comply with all NJCAA rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate program's recruiting efforts by identifying and evaluating prospects, making initial contact with potential recruits, and selling the school and program to recruits that meet admission guidelines to achieve roster goals and build a competitive team.
  • Maintain records of all recruiting contacts and keep Athletics Director informed of recruiting efforts.
  • Assist with making regular contact with students and assist with needs for enrollment into college such as transcripts and class scheduling.
  • Establish the team's competition and practice schedules which include but not limited to coordinating, locating, and scheduling of opponents, make travel arrangements for away games. Scheduling and assistance for opponents' practices in gymnasium and possible travel.
  • Communicate with the Academic Advising office, Student Services and the Athletic Director regarding class, absences, and academic progress
  • Assist the Sports Information Director with player and program information for publication on athletics web site and other media information.
  • Coordinate and organize equipment.
  • Frequent travel including overnight and weekends is required.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Candidates should possess a thorough knowledge of basketball, a sophisticated understanding of coaching and training strategies, and a demonstrated ability to enhance student athlete development.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years of experience as a head coach or assistant coach at the high school or collegiate level (Volunteer coaching experience may be considered), which must include the following:
  • Facilitating coaching strategies and techniques.
  • Certification in Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

  • Sustained posture or intense attentiveness for prolonged periods of time. Lifting (more than 50 lbs.), walking, pushing, and pulling on a regular basis.
  • Occasional exposure to risk controlled by safety precautions. Frequent travel, including overnight and weekend travel, is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Preference will be given to candidates familiar with NJCAA and Maryland Junior College (JUCO) guidelines and policies.
  • Six (6) years of collegiate experience as a player or coach preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basketball, a sophisticated understanding of coaching and training strategies, and a demonstrated ability to enhance student athlete development.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with student athletes from all backgrounds, while fostering teamwork, and ensuring a positive experience for all athletes
