Position Summary

The Head Volleyball Coach/ Freshman Seminar Advisor is responsible for providing training, direction, encouragement, motivation, and advice to prepare athletes for games and competitive events adhering to the general employee guidelines as specified by the Personnel handbook, the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC), and the National Junior College Athletic Association. Responsible for assisting students with program planning, transfer information, course selections, and registration. Teach and orient students to the College.

Salary: Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule E1, Grade 1: $56,139 - $76,577

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and discipline players both on and off the court.
  • Hire and supervise assistant coaches during practice and the games.
  • Recruit the best possible student athletes to Calhoun, preferably in North Alabama.
  • Report all relevant activities and actions to the athletic director, Vice President of Student Services, Academic Dean and the President.
  • Teach orientation classes each semester to incoming freshmen & assist with coordination of orientation curriculum to encourage student persistence.
  • Plan and implement effective orientation strategies.
  • Review the Calhoun Catalog annually to become familiar with changes affecting prospective and current student enrollments.
  • Follow the proper chain of command with any relevant issues in the college.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with all faculty and staff at the College, service area businesses, industries, and agencies
  • Supervise and maintain the Calhoun volleyball facility and other facilities that are used by the volleyball team.
  • Organize all practice and game plans for the players, assistant coaches, and managers to follow.
  • Consistently monitor volleyball equipment to ensure that it is properly used.
  • Demand proper conduct of the student athletes towards all members of the college and in the community.
  • Coordinate the volleyball program which includes scheduling games, travel arrangements, summer camps, budgeting, preparation of the volleyball facility, game personnel for competition, recruiting, monitoring player academic responsibilities, and any other duties assigned relating to the volleyball program.
  • Assist the assigned athletic trainer.
  • Coordinate practice schedule and facility use with other members of the athletic department and college.
  • Assist in game concessions and participate in fundraising activities for the athletic department.
  • Conduct fundraising activities for the volleyball program.
  • Cooperate with the Office of Public Relations and local media in promoting Calhoun Community College Athletics.
  • Abide by eligibility requirements established by Calhoun Community College, ACCC, and the NJCAA.
  • Participate in scheduled in-service activities.
  • Provide academic and career advice to students and promote student leadership and enrichment experiences.
  • Coordinate and enforce player study hall with the S.T.A.R.S Institute.
  • Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, Personnel Handbook, and State Board Policy Manual; and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area businesses, industries, and agencies.
  • Provide advice to the administration on matters pertaining to the instructional program.
  • Serve on committees engaged in furthering the work of the institution when appointed or when elected.
  • Maintain knowledge of financial aid opportunities for prospective and current students.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of other college policies and procedures including academic support, and student activities.
  • Serve as an advising resource during registration periods.
  • Attend recruiting programs as requested for the purpose of recruiting prospective student populations.
  • Identify ways to measure the effectiveness of orientation events, and establish a system of tracking outcomes.

Qualifications

  1. A minimum of a Bachelors degree from an accredited institution is required.

  2. A minimum of (3) years' experience coaching volleyball at the high school or collegiate level is required.

  3. Skills in making effective public oral presentations to small groups and/or large audiences is required.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate through their experiences and accomplishments:

  • Experience as a Head coach.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Experience in the use of current educational technologies and understanding of basic computer skills and presentation software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to be insured.
  • Effective human relations skills, professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment to career exploration.
  • Successful problem-solving skills and confidence in decision-making and communications skills;
  • Ability to coordinate and coach a successful collegiate volleyball team;
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and supervise student athletes including a willingness to maintain flexibility to meet students' needs;
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety rules, regulations, and CPR certification;
  • Knowledge of current coaching methods, collegiate eligibility standards, first aid, and sports medicine practices;
  • Knowledge of the Calhoun Community College Catalog, admissions policies and procedures, general financial aid information, and college departments
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Ability to deal effectively with diverse students, other employees, and the public;
  • An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and missions of the community college system;
  • Competency in the use of current educational technologies and understanding of basic computer skills;

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
