    Job Description

    Job Title: Health Assistant

    Reports To: District Registered Nurse

    Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

    Calendar: 187 Days (or as assigned)

    Primary Purpose

    Assist the District Registered Nurse in providing health services to students and staff. Perform routine clinic duties, administer medications and delegated health procedures, provide first aid, maintain health records, and support district health programs under the direction of the District Registered Nurse.

    Qualifications

    Education/Certification

    Required

    • High school diploma or GED.

    Preferred

    • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
    • Other healthcare-related certification or relevant experience approved by the District
    • Current CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification upon employment.

    Special Knowledge and Skills

    • Knowledge of basic first aid and emergency care.
    • Knowledge of infection control procedures and universal precautions.
    • Ability to administer medications according to physician orders and district procedures.
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and protect confidential information.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, parents, staff, and healthcare providers.
    • Basic computer skills.

    Experience

    Experience in a healthcare or school setting is preferred.

    Major Responsibilities and Duties

    Health Services

    • Provide first aid and basic health care to students and staff.
    • Administer medications and delegated health procedures as directed by the District Registered Nurse and in accordance with district policy.
    • Assist with the implementation of Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and other student health plans.
    • Observe students with health concerns and report changes in condition to the District Registered Nurse.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of clinic visits, medications, treatments, and procedures.
    • Assist with required health screenings, including vision, hearing, and other state-mandated programs.
    • Maintain clinic supplies and notify the District Registered Nurse when supplies need to be replenished.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinic environment.
    • Follow district procedures related to infection control and universal precautions.

    Communication

    • Communicate with parents regarding student illness, injury, or clinic visits as appropriate.
    • Work cooperatively with campus administrators, teachers, counselors, and other staff regarding student health needs.
    • Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with district policy and applicable laws.

    Emergency Response

    • Respond to medical emergencies on assigned campus(es).
    • Provide CPR and first aid within the scope of training and certification.
    • Assist emergency medical personnel as needed.
    • Participate in campus emergency drills and preparedness activities.

    Administrative Responsibilities

    • Maintain medication logs, clinic records, and required documentation.
    • Assist with state reporting requirements and other health-related records.
    • Complete clerical duties related to campus health services.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the District Registered Nurse.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    None.

    Mental Demands

    • Maintain emotional control under stress.
    • Work with frequent interruptions.
    • Exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.

    Physical Demands

    • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
    • Ability to assist students when necessary.
    • Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
    • Travel between campuses as assigned.

    Evaluation

    Performance will be evaluated annually by the District Registered Nurse in accordance with Board policy and district procedures.
