Description

Nursing functions include but are not limited to First Aid, CPR, administration of medications, specialized healthcare procedures and techniques, signs and symptoms of child abuse, infection control procedures, hazardous waste management, record keeping and reporting requirements.

Performs general office and clerical duties requiring the ability to interpret and apply procedures and policies to assigned responsibilities. Clerical duties require the ability to perform light typing/keyboarding using a computer.

CURRENT VACANCIES: Permanent opportunities exist at various school sites. Positions are 8 hours per day and are 10 months per year at elementary schools, and 11 months per year at secondary schools. All positions include district-paid benefits for the employee and dependents. New employees in this classification are hired at an advanced step of the salary schedule.

Examples of Duties

  • When assigned to the Health Office, renders minor first aid; updates and files student health records; maintains health office equipment and supplies in a clean and usable condition; prepares first-aid kits for use by classroom teachers; assists nurses in working on state mandated programs; prepares and displays health education materials. May assist in transporting ill or injured students or employees on District property.
  • Administers blood pressure monitoring, catheterization, diabetic monitoring, gastrostomy tube feeding, gastrostomy tube reinsertion, feeding or medicating, mechanical ventilation care, oxygen administration, respiratory assistance with inhaler or mechanical nebulizer, tracheostomy care including cleaning, suctioning and tube replacement, toileting assistance, diapering.
  • Ensures all specialized healthcare procedures are provided under specified written authorizations approved by an authorized healthcare provider and school nurse with parents written consent.
  • Administers prescribed medications according to instructions and district policies.
  • Administers emergency healthcare plans as designated by the credentialed school nurse, parent and authorized healthcare provider.
  • Participates in IEP meetings if requested by the credentialed school nurse.
  • Consults with credentialed school nurse regarding first aid and emergency care of assigned students.
  • Performs clerical work including proofreading, light typing, filing, checking and recording information on records; sorts, codes, and files correspondence, vouchers, forms, documents, and other materials numerically, alphabetically or by another predetermined classification.
  • Checks records and papers for clerical and mathematical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Acts as a receptionist, accepts applications for school services, answers the telephone and gives information to the general public; receives and refers inquires to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains sections of a central records system; enters or extracts information on or from records using a computer terminal.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

One year of recent nursing experience working with medically fragile children or adults or any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of a valid State of California License of Vocational Nursing or Registered Nursing.

Depending upon assignment, possession of a valid State of California Class C drivers license. Ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability.

Possession of a standard Red Cross First-Aid Certificate within three months of appointment may be required.

DESIRABLE: Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Incumbents in this class may work in 1) a health office with a variety of students, staff, parents and other members of the public, or 2) in a one to one situation caring for one or more individuals with special health care needs. They may be required to drive personal vehicle to various sites to conduct work.

A review of applicants experience and qualifications will be conducted periodically. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of top-qualifying applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. Probationary Period: 130 days of paid service.

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice.

Depending on hours worked per day:

Benefits for permanent employees who work less than 4 hours per day include vision care.

Benefits for permanent employees who work 4 or more hours per day include medical, dental, vision and life insurance.

Salary: The beginning and ending salary steps are shown on each examination announcement. Employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.

Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.

Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.

Retirement: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

Examination Process: A review of the applicants experience and qualifications will be conducted. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.

Eligibility List: Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.

Classification: When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.

Fingerprint Requirement: California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.

Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination: New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.

Accommodation: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application.

Physical Examination: Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others. As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination. Tests must be given by a District-approved physician.

Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432): As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.

Veterans Preference: Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.
