MDE is committed to a mission of protecting and restoring the environment for the health and well-being of all Marylanders with a vision of healthy, vibrant, and sustainable communities and ecosystems throughout the state. ## GRADE 19 ## LOCATION OF POSITION Air and Radiation Administration Radiological Health Program 1800 Washington Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21230 ## Main Purpose of Job The Health Physicist Supervisor will plan, direct, develop, and implement activities of the Radioactive Materials Inspection Section. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for statewide oversight that includes: Radioactive material inspections Investigations Enforcement actions Facility decommissioning Emergency response Financial assurance These efforts assure that users of radioisotopes are conducting their licensed activities in a safe and legal manner. The Health Physicist Supervisor is also responsible for providing technical advice and recommendations on health physics matters and on the regulations of ionizing radiation sources. ### Working Conditions The working conditions of this position may involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. During some industrial plant visits, the incumbent may encounter high or low ambient temperatures, fumes, or dust. Work involves exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. The incumbent may be exposed to radiation during routine inspections and emergency responses. Work involves special physical demands such as climbing ladders, etc. Work requires the use of protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, mask, etc. When going on site visits, protective gear is mandatory. This position involves conducting inspections throughout Baltimore City and surrounding Maryland counties. The incumbent is required to operate a State vehicle. If you currently hold an out-of-state drivers license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Please note that all individuals must maintain a valid drivers license with no more than five points to operate a State vehicle. ## MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must satisfy the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position and move forward in the hiring process. Please read all requirements before applying. ### Experience Nine years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public. ### Notes 1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical, or biological sciences and five years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public for the required experience. 2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience. 3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for six years of the required experience. 4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree in mathematical, biological, or physical science from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience. 5. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management, or other related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for seven years of the required experience. 6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. ## DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Please note that your answers to the supplemental questionnaire must correspond to the information provided on your application to receive credit. A bachelors degree in biology, environmental and health sciences, medical physics, or physics. Experience managing employees in a technical or regulatory environment. A high level of expertise regarding Health Physics or Radiation Safety. Security including knowledge of radiation and radioactive materials. Experience with radiation control regulations and familiarity with related guidance documents. Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Radiation Safety Specialist, or Radiation Expert. ## LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
