Duties

Help

As a Health Physicist, you will:

  • Manage and oversee radiation safety and protection programs.
  • Conduct technical evaluations, risk assessments, and radiological surveys to identify, monitor, and mitigate radiation hazards across facility operations and workspaces.
  • Develop and implement radiation safety policies, standard operating procedures, and emergency response protocols.
  • Serve as technical authority and consultant on health physics, advising senior leadership, project managers, external regulatory bodies, and the public on specialized safety matters.
  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver radiation safety training and exposure-monitoring programs.
  • Review and collaborate on the design, renovation, and installation of facility workspaces, specialized instrumentation, and shielding to ensure adequate engineered controls against radiation exposure.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT: You must meet both the Basic Requirement and the Specialized Experience to qualify for this series as described below. See the Education section for the Basic Requirement.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

GS-12: A qualified candidates online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following:

  • Interpreting and applying radiation protection standards and regulations.
  • Coordinating the safe handling, tracking, packaging, decontamination, and/or disposal of radioactive materials and waste.
  • Performing safety surveys, contamination swipe tests, and ambient radiation dose measurements.

GS-13: A qualified candidates online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following:

  • Planning, implementing, and administering a radiation safety program.
  • Evaluating site or facility-wide activities to identify hazards and regulatory requirements.
  • Modifying existing safety procedures, developing new protocols, and evaluating contractor or program safety analysis reports.

GS-14: A qualified candidates online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following:

  • Leading and conducting site-level evaluations or programmatic audits of contractor or facilities radiation protection programs.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and resolving questionable technical issues, safety trends, or non-conforming radiological conditions.
  • Conducting investigations into allegations of potential radiation damage or exposure, and authoring formal technical appraisal reports for senior leadership.

"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must meet all of the requirements as described in this section.

Education

This vacancy has a positive education requirement. In order to be rated as qualified, you must provide copies of your college transcripts. BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR 1306 SERIES

  • Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
