    Position Title Health Sciences Librarian FLSA Department University Main Library Job Summary

    Xavier University of Louisiana seeks a collaborative, service-oriented Health Sciences Librarian to serve as the resident library expert for health sciences programs and partnerships. This position provides specialized library services and instruction to support the College of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Program, Speech Pathology, Public Health and Health Informatics, and Genetic Counseling programs. As Xavier's health sciences portfolio continues to grow, this position will have the exciting opportunity to grow alongside it, contributing to the development of library services in support of emerging clinical and health professions education, including the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM), currently in development with a projected launch in 2027. This is a faculty position that offers significant room for professional growth in a dynamic and mission-driven environment.

    Emerging Health Sciences Library Services

    Xavier's Main Library is actively developing its health sciences library program in anticipation of XOCOM's launch and the continued expansion of Xavier's health-related academic programs. The Health Sciences Librarian will have the opportunity to contribute to this foundational work over time, including:

    • Participating in conversations around the design and delivery of library services tailored to health professions and clinical education environments;
    • Exploring models for embedded librarianship and point-of-care library services that may be developed in collaboration with XOCOM faculty, staff, and clinical partners as the program matures;
    • Building relationships with health sciences faculty, administrators, and off-campus partners - including the Ochsner Health library system - to align library resources and services with program needs; and
    • Contributing to strategic planning for health sciences collections and services as XOCOM's curriculum and accreditation requirements come into focus.

    Research Support & Consultation Responsibilities

    • Provide individual and group research consultations for health sciences students and faculty;
    • Assist with systematic reviews and complex literature searches, including development of comprehensive search strategies across multiple health sciences databases;
    • Support evidence-based practice (EBP) initiatives across health sciences programs;
    • Assist faculty and students with citation management tools (e.g., Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley);
    • Support research data management, including assistance with data management plans (DMPs) as required by NIH, NSF, and other federal funding agencies; and
    • Maintain working knowledge of federal data sharing requirements and open access policies, including NIH data sharing mandates and public access policies.

    Instruction Responsibilities

    • Design, teach, and assess information literacy curricula aligned with health sciences program needs and accreditation standards;
    • Work with the Learning, Research, and Technology team to design and maintain online learning objects, including web-based tutorials and LibGuides research guides;
    • Develop shared instructional materials in various formats, including in-class activities, tutorials, and training materials;
    • Collaborate with faculty to design information literacy sessions and special programs integrated into health sciences coursework;
    • Create targeted and innovative programming to engage health sciences students and faculty (such as health sciences information fairs or library open houses);
    • Develop and curate Open Educational Resources (OERs) in support of health sciences programs.
    • Apply principles of accessibility and universal design for learning (UDL) in the development of instructional content and library resources.

    Liaison Librarian Responsibilities

    • Serve as the primary library liaison to the College of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Program, Speech Pathology, Public Health and Health Informatics, Genetic Counseling, and, as it develops, XOCOM;
    • Work with health sciences faculty to identify and recommend appropriate library databases, print books, and eBooks for purchase; collaborates with the Collection Development Librarian to process and fulfill collection recommendations;
    • Evaluate library materials for currency, relevance, and alignment with program needs (e.g., recommends items for deselection in consultation with faculty and the Collection Development Librarian;
    • Communicate regularly with on-campus health sciences partners about library services, resources, and programs;
    • Maintain a liaison relationship with off-campus partners, including the Ochsner Health library system, to facilitate resource sharing, referrals, and collaborative programming; and
    • Provide guidance on copyright, fair use, and interlibrary loan (ILL) in health sciences and clinical contexts.

    Service and Scholarship Responsibilities

    • Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development through scholarly research and publication, conference presentations, and participation in professional associations;
    • Serve on library, university, and/or consortia committees, boards, or working groups as appropriate; and
    • Contribute to the broader mission of Xavier's Main Library through active participation in library initiatives and university service;

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program is required;
    • 3-5 years of library experience, preferably in an academic or health sciences library setting;
    • Knowledge of major health sciences databases and information resources, including PubMed/MEDLINE and NLM resources;
    • Knowledge of evidence-based practice frameworks and systematic review methodologies;
    • Knowledge of relevant academic and instructional design technologies for content creation (e.g., Camtasia, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Creative Suite);
    • Knowledge of a learning management system (e.g., D2L Brightspace, Canvas);
    • Proficiency with Springshare products (LibGuides, LibAnswers, etc.;)
    • Understanding of copyright, fair use, and interlibrary loan principles in an academic and health sciences context;
    • Knowledge of accessibility standards and universal design for learning (UDL) principles;
    • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals at all levels;
    • Commitment to ongoing professional development and engagement with the library and health sciences communities; and
    • Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana and Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) certification, or demonstrated willingness to pursue certification;
    • Experience with health sciences databases including PubMed, CINAHL, ClinicalKey, AccessMedicine, and Embase;
    • Experience conducting or supporting systematic reviews, scoping reviews, or other evidence synthesis projects;
    • Second advanced degree in a health-related field (e.g., public health, nursing, pharmacy, biology);
    • Familiarity with clinical information needs and healthcare or health professions education environments;
    • Experience with research data management and federal data sharing policies; and
    • Demonstrated experience or interest in embedded librarianship or point-of-care library services.
