JOB PURPOSE
The Heavy Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. This includes trucks, trailers, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and other diesel-operated equipment. The mechanic ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
Role and Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance on diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system issues.
- Repair and replace defective components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, and suspensions.
- Conduct inspections and identify potential equipment failures.
- Use diagnostic software, computerized equipment, and hand tools to troubleshoot problems.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Test equipment following repairs to verify proper operation.
- Respond to field service calls and emergency breakdowns as required.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Order and manage parts and shop supplies as needed.
- Collaborate with operations and management teams to minimize equipment downtime.
Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Behaviors:
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Technical training in diesel technology or related field preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience repairing heavy diesel equipment, trucks, or construction machinery.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and air brake systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
- Ability to operate diagnostic tools and computerized repair equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate shop equipment and heavy machinery.
Preferred Certifications
- ASE Diesel Certification.
- OEM Certifications (Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Kenworth, Peterbilt, etc.).
- CDL Class A or B.
- OSHA Safety Training.

The Heavy Diesel Mechanic works in shop and field environments, maintaining a fleet of heavy trucks, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and related diesel-powered assets. The position may require overtime, weekend work, and on-call responsibilities to support operational needs.
