Position Summary

Jerry's Truck & Trailer Repair is seeking an experienced Heavy Diesel Shop Foreman to lead the day-to-day operations of our Roberts diesel shop.

This is a working foreman position. The Shop Foreman will lead from the floor—assigning and prioritizing work, supporting and developing technicians, troubleshooting difficult repairs, monitoring productivity and quality, and working hands-on alongside the team when needed.

The Shop Foreman is responsible for keeping the shop moving. This includes making sure technicians have clear direction, jobs are properly prioritized, repairs are completed safely and correctly, parts and information are available when needed, and customer commitments are being met.

In addition to shop leadership, this position will also serve as a customer-facing technical resource, assisting with service writing and service advisor responsibilities. The Foreman will communicate with customers about repair needs, estimates, approvals, timelines, and completed work and help ensure repair orders are accurate from intake through invoicing.

This role is ideal for an experienced heavy diesel technician who is ready to take ownership of the shop while remaining hands-on with the work.

Shop Foreman Leadership & Operations

• Lead the daily workflow and overall operation of the heavy-duty diesel shop.

• Assign and prioritize work to technicians based on skill level, workload, parts availability, safety, and customer needs.

• Monitor open jobs throughout the day and adjust priorities as operational needs change.

• Provide technicians with technical direction, troubleshooting assistance, and hands-on support.

• Step into repairs and diagnostics as needed to keep jobs moving and support the team.

• Set expectations for productivity, workmanship, documentation, safety, and accountability.

• Monitor technician efficiency and identify barriers affecting productivity or job completion.

• Review completed repairs for quality and accuracy and help prevent repeat repairs and comebacks.

• Train, coach, and mentor technicians and help identify individual development needs.

• Assist leadership with technician performance feedback and shop staffing needs.

• Coordinate technician schedules and shop capacity to effectively manage workload.

• Conduct or coordinate daily shop/workload discussions to establish priorities.

• Ensure technicians have the necessary parts, tools, equipment, information, and approvals to complete assigned work.

• Coordinate with Parts, Service, Towing, Dispatch, and management as necessary.

• Monitor "truck down," emergency, safety-related, and high-priority repairs.

• Help maintain appropriate preventive maintenance and DOT inspection schedules.

• Identify recurring repair issues and recommend process or maintenance improvements.

• Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and professional shop environment.

• Reinforce company safety procedures and proper use of tools and equipment.

• Take ownership of shop workflow and help ensure customer commitments and completion timelines are met.

Hands-On Diesel Diagnostics & Repair

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty diesel trucks, tow trucks, wreckers, trailers, and company equipment.

• Perform advanced diagnostics involving diesel engines, electrical systems, air brakes, hydraulics, suspension, steering, driveline, and emissions/aftertreatment systems.

• Assist technicians with complex diagnostic and repair issues.

• Perform repairs directly based on shop workload and operational needs.

• Inspect vehicles and equipment and identify necessary repairs and maintenance.

• Perform or assist with preventive maintenance and DOT inspections.

• Use diagnostic software, scan tools, lifts, welding equipment, and shop equipment safely.

• Document diagnostic findings and repairs accurately.

Service Advisor & Customer Support

• Serve as a technical point of contact for customers, fleet managers, owner-operators, and drivers.

• Listen to customer concerns and translate them into clear repair orders for technicians.

• Explain diagnostic findings and recommended repairs in understandable terms.

• Prepare or assist with parts-and-labor estimates and obtain necessary customer approvals.

• Communicate repair status, additional findings, parts delays, and expected completion times.

• Maintain communication with customers throughout the repair process.

• Review technician documentation to ensure labor, parts, repairs, and recommendations are accurately captured.

• Assist with opening, updating, and closing repair orders.

• Review completed repair orders for accuracy before invoicing.

• Help resolve customer questions or service concerns professionally.

• Maintain accurate information in ShopMonkey and other company systems.

Experience & Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on heavy-duty diesel repair experience preferred, with strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.

• Previous experience as a Shop Foreman, Lead Technician, Service Foreman, or senior-level diesel technician strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and provide technical direction to other technicians.

• Strong knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines, electrical systems, air brakes, hydraulics, suspension, steering, driveline, and emissions/aftertreatment systems.

• Experience working with Class 7–8 trucks, commercial fleet vehicles, tow trucks, wreckers, trailers, or heavy equipment preferred.

• Experience assigning and prioritizing repair work and managing multiple jobs through completion.

• Ability to perform advanced diagnostics and assist technicians with complex repairs.

• Experience communicating directly with customers regarding diagnostics, recommended repairs, estimates, approvals, and completion timelines.

• Familiarity with repair orders, labor estimates, parts, service documentation, and shop-management software.

• Strong organization, communication, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced shop environment.

• Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.

• ASE/OEM certifications are a plus.

• Must have own basic technician tools.
