POSITION SUMMARY

We are pleased to offer the opportunity to work as a Heavy Equipment Crew Leader within the Division of Transportation at DuPage County.

This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

This position is included in the Bargaining Unit of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150.

This position is eligible for our complete benefit package including medical, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, pension, deferred compensation plan, tuition reimbursement, pre-paid legal and credit union. As a team member at DuPage County, you will also have access to time off with pay on Designated Holidays or holiday pay if required to work, Vacation time, Sick time and Personal days. Employees in this role receive 1 hour per day of on-call pay for November 1st through March 31st.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include:

  • Serves as a lead worker to assigned work crews to include: prioritizing and assigning work; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment
  • Trains lower classified personnel when assigned to crew
  • Determines what equipment, material, safety equipment, and traffic control devices are necessary for each job
  • Operates equipment for the installation of culverts, tile, drainage inlets and ditches
  • Operates snowplow for removal of snow and ice from roadways while acting as lead worker on a plow route
  • Maintains records, and track job progress using supplied software
  • Transports equipment to work sites
  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment not requiring a mechanic
  • Performs miscellaneous maintenance duties such as snow and ice control, general traffic control, and is subject to call-out for emergency maintenance service at all times

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:

  • Completion of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma equivalent
  • Four (4) years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment or specialized complex equipment including one (1) year prior experience supervising work crews
  • Possession of a valid Illinois Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brakes. A Class A CDL with Air Brakes is required within 6 months of hire or promotion.

The Preferred Candidate will:

  • Have experience operating a Gradall
  • Possess extensive knowledge of grading, trenching, ditching, and material handling using a Gradall

A post offer physical is required.

A pre-employment background check is required.
