This position is for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III located in Craig. Starting base pay is typically $64,428-$67,848/year.
This position requires that you obtain your CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and your CDL Class A or B within 120 days of hire as a condition of continued employment. This position will require either a pre-employment drug test (if you currently have a regular driver's license) or a DOT drug test (if you already have your CDL Permit or CDL) as a pre-employment step. As part of the process to obtain your CDL permit, you will be required to take a DOT physical and DOT drug test.

About the Position
The Colorado Department of Transportation has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic that is based out of our equipment shop in Craig. This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve and assure the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition following the rules and policies of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Diagnoses, services and repairs of various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems. Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to, 10-ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, Snow blowers and mower tractors with mower decks tow behind and side arm. Perform scheduled fleet preventive maintenance on the Regions fleet. As well as training the patrol members. To include all oil changes, lubrication services and annual DOT inspections. This position will be required to travel to all of the sections patrol barn and boundaries. Work will be performed in both a shop and field environment. Under the supervision of the shop foreman this position will receive all scheduled services to be performed. All work will be accounted for on the correct issued work order type in SAP. This position will also inspect and resolve any AVL reporting issues. Inspect, repair, install components and ensure that the sections AVL reporting is functioning correctly.

A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years.
Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program, or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school, beyond high school, in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics will be considered on a year for year basis. Unofficial transcripts or a copy of your certificate of completion are required if using education towards qualifications.
Experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair will be considered and must include at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15 mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level.
College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Conditions of Employment
Must obtain your CDL Permit within 30days of hire and your Commercial Driver's License Class A or B within 120 days of hire, with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
If you have a non-Colorado Commercial Driver's License, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire. If you currently live outside of Colorado and relocate to reside in Colorado, you must transfer your CDL to Colorado within 30 days of relocation.

Some on-call and shift work may be required.

Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
