Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance projects and performing routine preventive maintenance on assigned heavy equipment.
This position requires a Commercial Driver's License and falls under the Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Rules and Regulations.
This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent.
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Two years of experience operating medium or heavy equipment.
Education and/or experience preferences: None
Driver's License requirement: Commercial Drivers License Required Endorsements: Class B with Tanker endorsement.
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Federal, state and local laws, regulations, rules and ordinances, and City and departmental policies and procedures related to area of operation including occupational hazards and safety precautions. Techniques, practices and principles of proper use of tools and equipment related to area of operation. Blueprints, plans, schematics and other construction-related documents.
Skills: The safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools and work in potentially hazardous areas, around moving equipment and in a variety of work areas.
Abilities: Read cut and fill stakes and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, engineering blueprints, and procedure manuals. Understand and follow oral or written instructions, quickly and accurately. Utilize intermediate arithmetic abilities, including linear, square, and cubic measurements. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, contractors, city officials, employees, department heads, other departments and the public. Perform repetitive, short-cycle work and attain precise standards. Exercise sound judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with maintenance workers and craft workers to construct and repair city buildings, streets, and open space. External: Cooperates with utility contractors and vendors at the job site.
