About the Role:

The Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work on City and State-maintained stormwater systems, roads, creeks, and public rights-of-way through the safe operation of heavy equipment and construction tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment including backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber-tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other specialized equipment.
  • Construct, repair, and maintain storm drainage systems, culverts, ditches, creeks, roads, parks, and rights-of-way.
  • Perform concrete work, truck driving, jackhammering, creek stabilization, tree removal, and general construction activities.
  • Operate hand and power tools including chain saws, pole saws, grease equipment, and other construction tools.
  • Perform daily inspections, lubrication, cleaning, and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Follow all City safety policies, OSHA regulations, trench safety requirements, and work zone traffic control standards.
  • Participate in seasonal operations including loose leaf collection, snow and ice response, storm debris removal, and other emergency response activities.
  • Complete assigned documentation and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
  • Support departmental operations through flexible scheduling, extended work hours, emergency call-outs, and overtime as needed.
  • The ability to learn a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks, practices, methods, and materials used in general construction and maintenance work
  • The ability to learn safe work practices and report any potentially unsafe conditions; demonstrate attention to detail and strive continuously to build knowledge and skills
  • Ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

Additional Position Details:

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and operating heavy equipment for extended periods.
  • Position requires participation in emergency response operations, including storm recovery, snow and ice removal, and other critical City operations.
  • Extended hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins may be required based on operational needs.
  • Routine inspections and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment are an essential part of this position.
  • This position is Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED, with 1+ years of experience operating backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber-tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other specialized equipment.

  • No High School Diploma/GED, with 3+ years of education, plus 4 years of experience operating backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber-tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other specialized equipment.

  • Unrestricted Class A Commercial Drivers License (Or the ability to obtain within 120 days of employment), Tanker Endorsement

  • Additional Requirements:

  • If assigned to Stormwater -- Miner Certification ("Or" the ability to obtain within one year of hire date)

  • If operating a forklift, Forklift Operators License will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class A or B Commercial Drivers License;
  • Tanker Endorsement
  • Experience reading and interpreting route maps.
  • Experience with concrete work, truck driving, jackhammering, creek stabilization, tree removal, and general construction activities.
