HOURS: Monday - Friday; 7am-3:45pm

JOB SUMMARY:

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Operates a limited variety of heavy and light equipment such as dump truck, bobcat, backhoe, front-end loader, brush truck, and asphalt roller and performs related semiskilled or unskilled labor as needed.

Examples of work performed: ditches, operates a heavy roller to compact material such as aggregate base, asphalt pavement and dirt; operates a bobcat or backhoe to move dirt, solid waste and other material; operates a front end loader to load trucks and excavate sites for roads, parking lots, and building pads; operators dump truck as needed to haul dirt and other material; operates brush truck to pick up brush; operates a truck with blade attachment for plowing snow and to salt streets; maintains and performs routine repair work on equipment; uses hand tools to shovel material, finish concrete, and otherwise assist in the construction of sidewalks and catch basins and roadway maintenance. Performs related work as required.

Equipment operators at this level perform work requiring intermediate skill in the operation of a particular type of equipment and /or skill in a particular type of construction under general supervision. Less skilled operation of other equipment in other types of construction is performed under close supervision.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of operating practices and experience with particular types of heavy equipment obtained thru hands on operation within the Department or during other job experience

Knowledge of state and city traffic regulations

Knowledge of safety precautions and maintenance of heavy equipment

Knowledge of materials and equipment used in general maintenance work

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions

Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Ability to successfully complete construction projects such as driveway tiles, catch basins and sidewalks with minimal guidance

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and co-workers

 

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three to six months of experience required in heavy equipment operation. Must possess a valid TN commercial driver's license (CDL) or must be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or equivalent preferred.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical:

Frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds required. Occasional pushing or lifting of more than 100 pounds is required. Subjected to extended periods of physical exertion while shoveling and digging. Good hand-eye

coordination required in the operation of large, heavy trucks and other heavy equipment especially when operating in and around construction on rights-of-way and in tight situations.

Environmental:

Regularly exposed to all weather conditions and loud noises.
