THE ROLE

The Heavy Equipment Operator I position is a full-time, hourly position and is located at our Environmental Waste Facility in Lost Hills. Heavy equipment will primarily include front-end loaders, screens, and conveyors. Other equipment that may be operated includes excavators, dozers, scrapers, generators and misc. other small pieces of equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or fatalities
  • Adjust windrows or piles by turning, watering, or covering to maintain proper biological activity
  • Manage aeration systems and blowers
  • Load and unload material from trucks, stockpiles, or conveyors
  • Perform extensive record keeping for compost operation
  • Collect and record compost samples and temperature/moisture readings as required
  • Assist with landfill equipment operation as needed
  • Conduct daily safety inspections and basic maintenance checks
  • Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required
  • Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored
  • Advise the Superintendent of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Participate in routine maintenance
  • Practice workplace safety
  • Perform other related duties

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Environmental conditions Must be able to work outdoors year-round in varying weather, including extreme heat and cold. May be exposed to hazardous substances, proper protective measures must be followed.
  • Mental demands- Conditions that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue. This position entails working independently and maintaining a schedule of work. Any problems or inconveniences may result in increased stress to complete tasks in a limited time.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling 25 to 50 pounds.
  • Climb on and around equipment and sit for long periods while operating equipment.
  • Work outside year-round in the different weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb stairs equivalent to at least two stories

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

1-3 years of experience in the following:

  • Equipment safety
  • Operation of front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, scrapers and other pieces of heavy equipment
  • Workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Record keeping system
  • Equipment cleaning standards and procedures
  • Supervisor experience preferred
  • Must be fully competent to perform all Operator 1 tasks
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Decision making skills
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills
  • Ability to read and write to record pickups and maintain daily records
  • Time management
  • Honest and trustworthy
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Flexibility
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics
  • Deal with the public in a positive, courteous and respectful manner
