Surry Community College is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator instructor to deliver classroom and hands-on instruction to adult learners enrolled in workforce training programs. This position focuses on teaching safe and effective operation of heavy equipment and preparing students for employment in the construction industry.

Flexible schedule to include day, afternoon, evening, or weekend classes based on program needs.

This role is well-suited for retired or semi-retired heavy equipment operators who are interested in sharing their professional experience, mentoring students, and contributing to helping train the future workforce.

This position supports short-term workforce training designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in construction and related fields.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in heavy equipment operation (e.g., dozers, excavators, dump truck)
  • Teach construction safety, OSHA standards, and jobsite practices
  • Demonstrate basic equipment maintenance and inspection
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and supportive learning environment

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write as applicable to subject area.

Ability to respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from students, internal staff, or members of the college community.

Ability to effectively present information to students, internal staff, or members of the college community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply mathematical operations required to tabulate student scores.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of information.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., dozer, excavator, dump truck) in a construction or industrial setting
  • Valid North Carolina Drivers License
  • Relevant industry experience in heavy equipment operation
  • Knowledge of construction safety and equipment practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • NCCER, OSHA, or related industry certifications
  • Prior teaching or training experience
