Heavy Equipment Operator - Landfill

The City of Greensboro is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Solid Waste & Recycling Department. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the daily flow of waste disposal operations by safely operating a variety of heavy and light equipment at the Citys Transfer Station. Estimated Hiring Salary Range: 43,755.00 - $57,573 00 Full Salary Range: $43,755.00. - $78,299.00 Annually

Work Schedule:

This position would work 4 10-hour shifts between Monday - Friday, based on business needs.

Hours can typically run between 7:00 am to 5:30 pm

About the Role:

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy and light equipment to support waste disposal operations at the Citys Transfer Station while ensuring efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment used in daily transfer station operations
  • Maintain the flow of waste disposal activities in a safe and efficient manner
  • Operate equipment, including skid steers, rubber-tired front-end loaders, tandem dump trucks, rubber-tired excavators/tamps, and water trucks
  • Assist with equipment maintenance and support mechanics with repairs as needed
  • Follow all safety procedures, operating guidelines, and departmental policies
  • Communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Maintain operational readiness and support changing business needs and emergency operations when required
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure successful daily operations

Additional Position Details

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Physical requirements include standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, shoveling, and lifting up to 50 pounds

  • Must maintain reliable communication access (cell phone or home phone)

  • Must maintain a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL)

  • Must obtain the following certifications:

  • Certified Landfill Operator

  • Certified Transfer Station Operator

  • Certifications issued through the North Carolina Solid Waste Association of North America (NC-SWANA)

  • Position is Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

  • Employees are paid bi-weekly

  • Work schedules are subject to change based on operational and business needs

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED, with 1+ years experience operating heavy equipment - i.e., backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, or excavator

  • No High School Diploma/GED, with 5+ years experience operating heavy equipment - i.e., backhoe, front-end loader, or excavator,

  • Valid drivers license

  • Commercial Class B Drivers License within 6 months of hire

  • NC SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) Landfill Operations Certification (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class A or B Commercial Drivers License
  • Experience in a landfill or transfer station environment
