HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR-PUBLIC WORKS

Department: Public Works

Pay Grade: 107

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Personnel Status: Regular Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads, drainage systems, and other public works infrastructure. This position reports to the Construction Division Manager, the Maintenance Division Manager, or the Landscape and Sustainability Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs equipment transport and operation duties.
  • Assists in the maintenance and construction of roadways, sidewalks, storm sewer systems, and other infrastructure.
  • Performs traffic control and flagging to maintain safe and efficient jobsites.
  • Performs excavation, grading, and earthwork necessary for construction and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Performs related construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) to two (2) years' experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Alabama Class A Commercial Driver's License for the type of vehicles and equipment operated within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, techniques and supplies used in sewer system construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of City geography, including the location of utilities.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of job-related tools and equipment.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work, which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, climbing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell and hearing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in outdoor environments, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
