seeking a Heavy Equipment Superintendent / Manager to lead our Equipment Division and keep our projects supplied with safe, reliable, and well-maintained gear. You’ll oversee everything from large excavators and dozers to trucks, trailers, and small tools—blending strategic fleet management with hands-on leadership.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee the full equipment lifecycle: selection, purchasing/rentals, assignment, maintenance, and disposal.
  • Manage a mixed fleet of heavy equipment, support vehicles, trailers, and small tools across multiple jobsites.
  • Lead and mentor shop and field mechanics/technicians; set daily priorities and guide complex repairs.
  • Build and manage preventive maintenance programs; minimize downtime and maximize uptime.
  • Ensure safety and compliance with DOT, OSHA, and company standards; lead inspections and safety meetings.
  • Coordinate equipment moves and scheduling with project managers and superintendents.
  • Manage vendor relationships (dealers, rental houses, parts suppliers); negotiate pricing and service terms.
  • Track utilization, costs, and key fleet metrics; support buy vs. rent decisions and budgeting.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

  • Reviewing fleet status and reallocating equipment to critical jobs.
  • Working with mechanics to troubleshoot high-impact equipment issues.
  • Checking shop operations and PM schedules.
  • Walking the yard or jobsites to inspect machines for safety and readiness.
  • Negotiating with vendors on purchases or rentals.
  • Holding quick huddles with your team around safety and priorities.

Key Measures of Success

  • High equipment uptime (target 95%+).
  • Reduced cost per operating hour and optimized own vs. rent mix.
  • Zero serious equipment-related safety incidents.
  • Strong, stable mechanic/tech team with low turnover.
  • Clean DOT/OSHA audits and full compliance.
  • Right-sized fleet with high utilization and minimal idle iron.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years managing heavy equipment fleets, equipment operations, or similar superintendent/manager role.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude (diesel, hydraulics, electrical) and ability to direct complex repairs.
  • Proven leadership experience managing mechanics/technicians/operators.
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation compliance (or CDL with strong DOT familiarity).
  • Experience managing equipment budgets, purchasing, and maintenance costs.
  • Safety-first mindset and familiarity with OSHA standards.
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with major brands (Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, etc.).
  • Familiarity with fleet management / CMMS software and telematics.
  • Technical training in diesel or heavy equipment.
  • Construction background (heavy civil, industrial, or infrastructure).
  • Vendor negotiation experience with OEMs, rental companies, and parts suppliers.
