Job Summary

This position is located in the District of Columbia Government, Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS), Apparatus Division. The mission of (FEMS) is to preserve life and promote health and safety through excellent pre-hospital treatment and transportation, fire prevention, fire suppression and rescue activities, and homeland security awareness.

The incumbent in this role is responsible for supporting the operations of the repair shop within the Apparatus Division of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The incumbent will assist in various tasks related to vehicle maintenance and repair under the supervision of higher-grade mechanics and/or managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Performs the following duties in any assigned mechanical shop within the District of Columbia Government, Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS). Removes wheel assemblies, batteries, sparkplugs, and charging batteries. Cleans and replaces sparkplugs, starters, alternators, headlight units, batteries, cables, radiators, and fuel pumps. Lubricates equipment, parts, and attachments. Checks motor oil levels; adds or changes oil and oil filters. Replaces grease fittings, oil caps, grease cups, battery tops, etc. Checks engines for worn fan belts, loose wiring, inflation, and tread wear. Charges batteries when necessary.

Utilizes pneumatic grease gun to apply grease. Operates light vehicles inside garage or between facilities. Operates a fuel and service truck for oil and lubrication for vehicles. Assists higher grade mechanics in making operation checks and adjustments. Utilizes the computer for inquiry and to open and close work orders.

Working Condition/Environment

Incumbent works indoors and outdoors. Inside, the tenant is frequently subjected to drafts, shifting temperatures, and noise, which can make it difficult to communicate. When outside, they may labor in inclement weather. Workers may sustain injuries such as cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruising, electric shock, and falls when fixing, placing, and transporting equipment.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFGE 3721. You may be required to have union dues or other applicable fees deducted from your salary.

Duration of Appointment: Career Service - Regular Appt.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm or 3:00pm-11:00pm
