The LA County Department of Human Resources (DHR) has authorized Hiring as an Emergency under Civil Service Rule 13.04 in response to Assembly Bill (AB) 2561 (McKinnor), which requires the County to report on high vacancy rates and recruitment efforts. This action supports a Countywide strategy to address persistent staffing shortages that threaten the delivery of essential public services. We are looking for qualified and committed individuals to help strengthen the County workforce and ensure residents continue to receive critical support. The Department of Beaches and Harbors is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Heavy Truck Driver vacancies related to the effort to stabilize critical services and accelerate hiring in high-need areas.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Heavy Truck Driver.
Essential Job Functions
Drives heavy trucks hauling materials, supplies, and equipment.
Drives oil trucks equipped for spraying oil or bituminous emulsions on road surfaces, water trucks, and other types of tank vehicles.
Operates accessory equipment such as pumps, winches, snowplows, etc.
Transports work crews, materials, tools, and equipment to job locations and may participate in the work of a crew or assist in their supervision.
Inspects trucks to ensure conformance with safety regulations and practices and that they are properly serviced; performs routine preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments to truck and reports mechanical defects.
Loads and unloads trucks and may participate in the storing or moving of materials in warehouses or other buildings.
Ensures that truck is checked for preventive maintenance and repair and serviced.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Pull small trailer-mounted equipment such as generators, compressors, cement mixers, toolboxes, etc., as needed.
Drives combination trucks with trailer units of 6,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or more, as needed
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
One year of full-time experience* driving trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of at least 10,000 pounds, including experience in the operation of trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of at least 26,001 pounds.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class B Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Some positions may require a valid California Class A Driver license or a special endorsement to drive assigned vehicles.
PHYSICAL CLASS4 - ARDUOUS:
This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: General Information:
This Training & Experience (T&E) Questionnaire is a self-assessment. Professional/Technical Expertise -- Heavy Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance : Includes proper techniques (e.g., checking gauges and dials, using proper fluids) and utilization of hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, spanners, utility knives, breaker bars, grease guns, pressure washers) when inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning heavy vehicle and equipment. 3. Professional/Technical Expertise -- Transportation and Driving Regulations : Includes pertinent provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Californias Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) Program regulations, Hours of Service Rules, pertaining to Class A and/or B Drivers and other related Federal, State, County, and local laws and regulations.
