Job Description

Compensation: $29.73 - $35.38 hourly DOEApplication Period Ends: Open Until Filled

Job SummaryThe Heavy Vehicle Technician is responsible for repairing and maintaining all County Fleet Department and contract vehicles and equipment, which may include various types of heavy machinery, emergency vehicle up-fitting and police car fabrication. The principle duties are performed indoors but may be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Supervision is provided by the Fleet Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fleet and Equipment Maintenance

Perform maintenance, diagnose and repair of trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other heavy-duty vehicles. Duties include hydraulic and electrical issues, performing routine maintenance, repairing or replacing parts and ensuring vehicles meet safety standards. Troubleshooting, and repair work on all fleet vehicles, contract vehicles, and other related equipmentPerform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, brake jobs, tire rotations, and alignmentsPerform repairs on hydraulic systems, drive trains, suspension systems, hoses and belts, steering systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation systems, and emissionsPerform troubleshooting and repair work on sophisticated and technical emergency equipment associated with public safety

Fabrication and Welding

Weld and fabricate equipment, parts, shields, gun racks, etc.Enhance police vehicles, including installation and wiring all lighting, electronics, and communication equipment, and related modifications

Teamwork and Public Service

Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity

Other Duties

Collect and preserve mechanical evidence from vehicles for reconstruction purposesPerform all work duties and activities following County policies, procedures, and safety practices in accordance with automotive industry standardsPerform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Skills and Abilities

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines and electronically controlled systemsApply advanced technical expertise across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systemsAnalyze complex equipment issues and implement effective solutionsPerform hands-on work requiring precision, coordination, and safe handling of heavy componentsFamiliarity with emergency vehicle up-fitting and police car fabricationProficient in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, and automotive systems (engines, electrical, and drive trains)Skilled in welding (electric and acetylene) and component fabricationKnowledge of safety practices with air-powered equipment, lifts, hoists, and tire breakdown equipmentProficient in using personal computers and software for maintenance, diagnostics, and repairsUse diagnostic and electronic equipment for repairsSkilled in operating mechanical tools, heavy equipment, and vehiclesAbility to follow instructions and comprehend repair manualsDemonstrate integrity and inventiveness in assigned tasksCommunicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and colleagues

Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks with accuracy and efficiency under time-sensitive deadlinesMiscellaneous frame and body work

Special Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver's license with Class B CDL endorsementMust obtain an Air Conditioner Recovery Certification within two (2) years of hireMust obtain a Radar Certification Equipment license within two (2) years of hireMust obtain a DEQ, A, B, Tank Operator Certification within one (1) year of hireAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferredMust successfully complete a background investigationMust be able to work on call after normal business hours to respond to emergencies

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalency is required and two (2) years of specialized coursework in automotive maintenance and repairFour (4) plus years of technically related experience preferredEquivalent combination of experience and training may be considered
