Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing inspections and diagnosing mechanical defects and problems on Police Department helicopter equipment, including airframe and engines. Exercises no supervision.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical defects and problems on helicopter equipment, including airframe and engines; perform mechanical repairs or adjustments as appropriate.
  • Analyzes engine or operational component failures; determines problems and causes; removes and performs overhaul of component parts as required; re-installs parts after repair; involves frequently lifting and carrying component parts weighing up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment including lubricating and replacing worn parts, checking fuel and condition of fueling equipment.
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections; records inspections performed and helicopter daily flight patterns, time and length of flight.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of shop equipment including a torque wrench, air grease gun, drill press, welder, dial indicator and deep cycle analyzer to be utilized during inspections, maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains repair and maintenance records, manuals and air worthiness for the helicopter airframes and the engines.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for the helicopters; maintains inventory of parts supply and fuel supply; contacts vendors.
  • Maintains and cleans the shop and aircraft hangar area.
  • Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of helicopter/aircraft maintenance and repair.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Three (3) years experience in helicopter airframe and power plant maintenance on helicopters.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Drivers License.
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Power Plant license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Airbus Helicopters models AS350B3e (H-125).

  • Experience with Safran HE ARRIEL 2D.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures, practices, and techniques of airframe and power plant repairs on helicopters.
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements relating to helicopter maintenance and safety.
  • Knowledge of tools, mechanical and electronic equipment used in the inspection, maintenance and repair of helicopters.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair helicopter airframes and power plants.
  • Ability to perform sheet metal repairs and modification per Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
  • Ability to maintain constant airworthiness of San Antonio Police Department helicopters per Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.
  • Ability to interpret electrical circuitry plans and machine drawings of helicopter equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Working conditions are primarily in an outside or shop environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, high noise levels, oily surfaces, and hazardous heavy equipment. May require overtime, shift work, weekends, nights, and holidays.
