The Hematology Nurse Practitioner plays an integral role in delivering specialized, compassionate care to patients with both benign and malignant blood disorders. The NP provides expert clinical assessment, develops and implements individualized treatment plans, manages acute and chronic hematologic conditions, and supports patients throughout their diagnostic and treatment journey.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive assessments, including patient history, physical examinations, and interpretation of diagnostic tests, for individuals with benign and malignant blood disorders.
Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with hematologists and the multidisciplinary care team.
Manage acute and chronic hematologic conditions such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, coagulopathies, and blood cancers under physician supervision.
Prescribe and adjust medications, order laboratory and imaging studies, and evaluate treatment response and tolerance.
Coordinate longitudinal care for patients receiving treatments such as transfusions, iron infusions, and targeted therapies.
Provide education and counseling for patients and families on diagnosis, treatment options, medication management, disease monitoring, and lifestyle considerations.
Monitor for adverse events, disease progression, and therapy complications; promptly address urgent clinical issues.
Participate in hematology case conferences and multidisciplinary discussions to optimize patient outcomes.
Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation within the electronic medical record system.
Contribute to quality improvement, clinical protocol development, and staff education initiatives.
Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program; Master’s or Doctorate degree required.
Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of New York.
National certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner required.
Minimum 2 years of experience as an NP in hematology, oncology, internal medicine, or related field strongly preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in the management of hematologic conditions and understanding of transfusion medicine.
Strong assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and critical thinking skills.
Excellent interpersonal communication and patient education abilities.
Proficient in EMR documentation and coordination of multidisciplinary care.
BLS certification required; OCN or hematology certification preferred.
