GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES.
Staff physicians in the hematology/oncology section, maintain professional, technical, and administrative knowledge, competencies, and skills to provide effective, timely and quality responses to patients' clinical needs and problems. Patient ages range from 18 through the geriatric years. All staff comply with credentialing and privileging and other monitoring and evaluation requirements. The physicians maintain high clinical standards that are carried into decision- making processes, and continually strive to maintain and enhance teaching skills to effectively teach fellows, residents and medical students. They participate in oversight of physician assistants and nurse practitioners in our section. The physicians comply with current standards for medical record documentation and residency supervision.

FUNCTIONS OR SCOPES OF PRACTICE.
The above responsibilities interplay in achieving quality patient care. The hematology/oncology physician provides service consisting of the care and treatment of patients consulted through their section, both in an inpatient and an outpatient setting; administers outpatient chemotherapy and immunotherapy in our on site infusion suite and handles any associated reactions; is occasionally needed to perform bone marrow aspiration/biopsies (which are primarily performed by the PA/NP) and supervises fellows to do the same.

Clinical Competence
1. When involved in direct patient care or when supervising same, demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities to: conduct examinations; determine diagnosis; therapeutic ability; effectiveness in emergencies; patient management; consultation; patient education; specialty skills; dictations and recordkeeping. Maintains a high level of skills in performing procedures and ensuring the complication rate is below the national level.2. Age-Specific Competence Recognize patient's function of independence. Encourages questions during treatment sessions by patient and other parties as appropriate. Allows patient to proceed during the appointment that is comfortable and appropriate. Allows time for the patient to process the information before moving onto the next concept.

Supervise Fellows and/or Residents
1. Maintain a high standard of teaching through direct patient care experiences in the clinics, in patient wards, in the ICU, and in the Oncology Section.
Resident Supervision Reports, teaching evaluations, and performance improvement evaluations are used to determine effectiveness.
2. Supervise House staff, effectively teach rotating house staffing patient wards when serving as attending.
3. Clerkship Program, precept medical students.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm M-F
