JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

John A. Holmes High School

Salary: State Salary Schedule

Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervises: N/a

Work Week Schedule: Monday - Friday; Must be available some nights and/or weekends

Work Hours: 40

Months per year: 10 months (with the potential for 1 additional month, evaluated annually based on the availability of funds)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The person in this position shall be responsible for assisting the school principal in the leadership, coordination, supervision and management of the school programs and operation.

The person in this position shall adhere to and enforce school board policies, district standards, school guidelines and administrative directives.

The person in this position shall assist with the establishment and promotion high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and appropriate behavior by dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility and demonstrating pride in the education profession.

The person in this position shall possess the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with school personnel, students, parents, central office staff and community members.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Instructional Leadership:

  • Assists in the establishment of goals and objectives for the school
  • Provides leadership in planning, implementing and evaluation of instructional programs
  • Coordinates the state testing program as needed
  • Provides leadership in teaching techniques, innovation and class organization
  • Assists in report preparation to make data driven decisions
  • Visits each classroom daily

Personnel Leadership:

  • Assists in the process of interviewing, evaluating and selecting new staff members
  • Assists in the determination of staff needs
  • Assists with the development of effective learning communities aligned with the school improvement plan and focused on results
  • Assists in working with individual staff members
  • Assists in evaluation of personnel for continuous growth
  • Coordinates revision of the teacher handbook

Student Leadership:

  • Assists in the planning and implanting of student programs
  • Supervises students during transitions and breaks such as arrival, departure, breakfast and lunch
  • Supervises extra and co-curricular activities (includes nights and weekends)
  • Establishes and enforces disciplinary procedures which allow for due process
  • Maintains proper discipline records and reports required by the state department and district
  • Recruits faculty advisors and supervises student activities as appropriate

Public Relations:

  • Assists in the communication between the school and community
  • Assist in the development and presentation of parent information as assigned
  • Establishes a professional rapport with students, staff and community members to earn their respect

Professional Growth:

  • Participates in professional growth activities
  • Participates in professional organizations who purpose is to improve administrative skills
  • Participates in district-wide committees as appropriate
  • Participates in decision making, planning and evaluation at the district level as appropriate
  • Participates in all required meetings

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands- Light physical work required occasionally up to 40 pounds lifting

Work Environment- Inside with some occasional outside environments; direct contact with staff,

parents and the public
