POSITION:

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly effective, student-centered educational leader to serve as a High School Assistant Principal. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and relationship-driven professional who is committed to supporting student achievement, fostering a positive school culture, and contributing to the overall success of the school community.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Principal serves as a key member of the school's leadership team, working alongside the principal, staff, students, and families to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. This position requires a leader who is visible, approachable, and responsive, with the ability to balance student support, staff collaboration, operational responsibilities, and instructional leadership.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, sound judgment, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners. Through a focus on teamwork, accountability, and service, the Assistant Principal will help advance the district's mission of educating, challenging, and inspiring every student to achieve personal success and become a confident contributor to society.

The Assistant Principal works with the Principal to establish the tone, climate, and direction of the school through careful long-range and short-term planning, as well as assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of student progress and the instructional program. An effective school leader encourages parents' participation in their children's education and welcomes community involvement.

DISTRICT OVERVIEW:

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K post-secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is in excess of $185 million, with state funding of $10,050 per pupil.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Superintendent in exercising the prerogative to determine appropriate qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher with graduate study in any of the following: school administration or educational leadership
  • Must hold a valid school administrator certificate or proof of enrollment in a program leading to certification as a school administrator at the time of application for this position

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Embrace the mission, vision, collective commitments, priority areas, Portrait of a Graduate, and Community with Character to make decisions that reflect the District's philosophy that places the needs of children and their education first.
  • The AP values the foundation of a strong school culture and climate.
  • Develop successful working relationships with school building staff, parents, students, and community members. Must possess highly effective written and verbal communication skills and function as an effective and collaborative team member and leader.
  • Be a strong advocate for student success. The AP motivates teachers and staff to provide students with necessary and appropriate opportunities to meet high standards.
  • Maintain and grow knowledge of quality instruction and assessment, and the ability to help teachers expand their repertoire of effective teaching strategies and assessment techniques. Must be capable of establishing the expectation for effective teaching and also possess the skills for supervising and evaluating instruction.
  • The AP will effectively utilize the district evaluation model for the evaluation of professional staff.
  • Assist the principal with the leadership of the professional staff and direct the resources of the school toward school improvement. As an instructional leader, the AP must possess a holistic view of secondary curriculum/assessment and lead the professional staff toward established goals in these areas.
  • Share the responsibility for developing a safe, orderly, and disciplined school environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. The AP effectively gains the understanding and cooperation of teachers and students in meeting the expectations of the code of conduct and other established school expectations. He or she must also build and support a climate where those rules are administered uniformly and fairly. The AP should be proficient at identifying problems, establishing priorities, and implementing solutions consistent with the school's and district's priorities and goals.
  • Assist the principal in creating a Professional Learning Community and support staff with leadership and time to collaborate around established expectations. Actively support school PLTs through meeting visits, review of team notes, dialogue with teams, etc.
  • Share responsibility for generating parental and community involvement/support and play an integral role in the area of community relations.
  • Collaboratively oversee the administration of the building, along with the principal, including leading school staff, master schedules, student attendance, school programs and communication, facility needs, and other essential elements of an effective school environment.
  • Stay current with educational developments and legislation affecting education, and participate in professional organizations.
  • Work with the principal in establishing a school culture and climate that engages all stakeholders and values the involvement, leadership, and collaboration of others.
  • Serve as a learning-centered leader, focused on the continuous development of his/her own knowledge, skills, and capabilities, as well as the development of the staff's capabilities and effectiveness as educators.
  • Work in collaboration with content area leaders (CALs), Department Chairs and applicable staff to advance and support teaching and learning. Additionally, work with the aforementioned to compile annual budget requests and resource needs. .
  • Supervise the preparation of student schedules.
  • Execute other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Educational Administrators (LEADS).
