High School Band Director

Position Title: High School Band Teacher/Director

Licensure Area:

800 - Music (K-12)

Position Purpose

The High School Band Director is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in instrumental music while developing and maintaining a comprehensive band program that supports academic achievement, musical excellence, student leadership, and school/community engagement. The Band Director creates a positive learning environment where students develop musical skills, discipline, teamwork, and personal responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging instructional lessons aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Music.
  • Direct all aspects of the high school band program, including concert band, marching band, pep band, jazz band, chamber ensembles, and other performing groups as assigned.
  • Prepare students for concerts, festivals, adjudications, athletic events, graduation ceremonies, parades, and community performances.
  • Recruit students into the instrumental music program and promote continued participation.
  • Collaborate with middle school music programs to ensure successful student transition into the high school band program.
  • Develop rehearsal schedules and performance calendars.
  • Maintain inventory of instruments, uniforms, music library, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Supervise the care, maintenance, and security of all band equipment and facilities.
  • Coordinate transportation, travel, and supervision for performances and competitions.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, booster organizations, and community stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, attendance, and financial records in accordance with district procedures.
  • Utilize technology to enhance instruction and communication.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning, school improvement activities, and district professional development.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
  • Follow all Rutherford County Schools Board of Education policies and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid North Carolina Professional Educator''s License in Music (K-12).
  • Bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university in Music Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music instruction, conducting techniques, rehearsal methods, and student assessment.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of instrumental pedagogy and music curriculum.
  • Ability to organize and direct large and small instrumental ensembles.
  • Ability to motivate students to achieve high levels of musical performance.
  • Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to organize multiple events while meeting established deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.

Physical Requirements

Work requires standing for extended periods, conducting rehearsals, lifting and transporting musical instruments and equipment up to approximately 50 pounds, traveling with student groups, and working evenings and weekends for rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
