High School Call-In Substitute Teacher

Substitute teachers play a vital role in maintaining the continuity of education when the regular teacher is absent. Their responsibilities are varied and can be demanding. Here are the key roles and responsibilities of a substitute teacher:

Classroom Management

Supervision: Maintain order and supervise students throughout the school day, including during classroom activities, recess, and lunchtime.

Behavior Management: Enforce school and classroom rules to manage student behavior and ensure a safe and productive learning environment.

Conflict Resolution: Handle any conflicts or issues that arise among students in a fair and consistent manner.

 Instructional Duties

Lesson Plans: Follow the lesson plans left by the regular teacher or given by the curriculum leader to ensure continuity in students' learning. This includes teaching new material, conducting reviews, and facilitating class discussions.  If the curriculum leader is available to lead the instruction the sub responsibility is to support instruction during the live model, continue with guided practice and independent practice AND replicate the live model in future blocks.  

Material Preparation: Prepare any necessary materials or resources for lessons if they are not already provided.

Assessment: Administer tests or quizzes as required, and sometimes grade assignments if instructed by the regular teacher.

Administrative Tasks

Attendance: Take daily attendance and report any absences to the school office.

Record Keeping: Keep accurate records of any assignments given, grades, or behavioral issues, and leave detailed notes for the regular teacher about what was accomplished during their absence.

Communication: Communicate effectively with students, other teachers, and school staff. Address any urgent concerns to the appropriate school personnel.

Adaptability and Flexibility

Adaptability: Be prepared to adapt to different classroom environments and student needs. Each classroom and school may have different expectations and routines.

Flexibility: Be ready to take on additional duties as needed, such as covering for other classes, assisting in special education, or helping with extracurricular activities.

Professionalism

Punctuality: Arrive on time and be prepared to start the school day promptly.

Professional Conduct: Maintain a professional demeanor at all times, adhering to the school’s dress code and policies.

Confidentiality: Respect the privacy and confidentiality of students and staff.

Student Engagement

Motivation: Engage and motivate students to participate actively in class activities and discussions.

Support: Provide support and encouragement to students, helping them to stay focused and on task.
