High School English Teacher

Nature of Work
Under the general supervision of the school principal, the High School English Teacher plans, organizes, and delivers instruction designed to help students develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, research, and critical-thinking skills. The teacher creates an instructional environment that supports students' academic, social, and personal development and prepares them for college, career, and civic life.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans and delivers high-quality English/language arts instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and district-approved curriculum.
- Provides learning experiences that develop students' skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, informational text analysis, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, research, and communication.
- Uses a variety of instructional strategies, materials, technology, and resources to meet the needs of students with a wide range of academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs.
- Provides whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction designed to meet student needs and promote student growth.
- Supports students in analyzing literature, informational texts, and other media while developing clear written and oral communication skills.
- Establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, structured, and engaging classroom environment.
- Implements effective classroom-management practices that promote student responsibility, participation, and appropriate behavior.
- Evaluates students' academic and social growth and maintains accurate records of attendance, grades, assessments, progress, and other required documentation.
- Uses student-performance data to plan instruction, provide feedback, and adjust instructional strategies.
- Provides appropriate instruction and activities to support school and district goals, policies, and objectives.
- Communicates with parents and guardians through conferences, phone calls, email, progress reports, and other appropriate means.
- Holds parent conferences to discuss student progress, classroom expectations, and instructional programs.
- Identifies student needs and collaborates with administrators, counselors, exceptional children staff, instructional support personnel, and other professional staff to support student success.
- Implements required accommodations, modifications, intervention plans, Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 Plans, and other student support plans.
- Creates and maintains an effective learning environment through appropriate classroom organization, instructional displays, learning resources, and technology.
- Maintains professional competence through district professional development, school-based professional learning, professional growth activities, and coursework as appropriate.
- Participates cooperatively in the evaluation process in accordance with district and state guidelines.
- Selects, uses, and maintains appropriate instructional materials, supplies, technology, and equipment.
- Supervises students during classroom instruction, transitions, arrival, dismissal, assemblies, field trips, and other assigned activities.
- Participates in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, school improvement activities, district committees, and student activities as assigned.
- Maintains professional conduct, confidentiality, and ethical standards in accordance with district policies and state requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid or eligible for a North Carolina teaching license in English/Language Arts for the assigned grade level.
- Successful completion of all required background checks.
- High school teaching experience preferred.

- Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for English/language arts.
- Knowledge of effective instructional practices for reading, writing, literary analysis, informational text analysis, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and research.

Essential Job Functions
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
