High School Math Teacher Job Description (Michigan)

Position Title

High School Math Teacher

Reports To

Building Principal

Position Summary

The High School Math Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing engaging mathematics instruction for students in grades 912. The teacher fosters a positive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and college and career readiness. Instruction may include courses such as Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and other mathematics courses aligned with Michigan state standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with Michigan Academic Standards and district curriculum.
  • Deliver effective instruction using a variety of teaching strategies to meet diverse student learning needs.
  • Differentiate instruction to support students of varying abilities, learning styles, and backgrounds.
  • Integrate technology and real-world applications into mathematics instruction.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and performance.

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment.
  • Implement effective classroom management techniques that promote student engagement and positive behavior.
  • Communicate clear expectations for student learning and conduct.

Student Support

  • Provide academic support and intervention for students who require additional assistance.
  • Encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and other support personnel to meet student needs.
  • Monitor student progress and communicate concerns and successes with students and families.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in professional learning communities, department meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and classroom activities.
  • Attend required staff meetings, conferences, and school events.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with district policies, state regulations, and professional standards.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to enhance instructional practices and content knowledge.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or district administration.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Secondary Education, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Certification

  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with appropriate secondary mathematics endorsement(s) required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of secondary mathematics content and instructional best practices.
  • Ability to analyze student data and use results to guide instruction.
  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in educational technology and learning management systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to operate standard classroom and office technology.

Work Environment

  • School classroom setting with regular interaction with students, staff, and parents.
  • May require attendance at evening events, parent conferences, and extracurricular activities.

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time position.
