    High School Physical Education and Health Teacher Job Description (Michigan)

    Position Title: High School Physical Education and Health Teacher

    Location: Michigan

    Reports To: Building Principal

    Employment Status: Full-Time, School Year

    Position Summary

    The High School Physical Education and Health Teacher is responsible for providing engaging instruction that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, wellness, and lifelong learning. The teacher develops and implements standards-based lessons in physical education and health education, assesses student progress, and fosters a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment. The position supports students' physical, social, emotional, and health-related development while encouraging personal responsibility and healthy decision-making. Michigan teachers in this assignment are typically required to hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an appropriate Health and Physical Education endorsement.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Instruction and Curriculum

    • Plan and deliver standards-aligned physical education and health education instruction.
    • Develop lessons that promote physical fitness, motor skills, nutrition, personal wellness, mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, and healthy decision-making.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
    • Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, technology, and assessment methods.
    • Maintain current knowledge of Michigan curriculum standards and educational best practices.

    Student Assessment

    • Assess and monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and participation.
    • Communicate student progress effectively to students, parents, and administrators.
    • Use assessment data to guide instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.

    Learning Environment

    • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom and gymnasium environment.
    • Enforce school and district policies regarding student behavior and safety.
    • Ensure proper use, care, and inventory of physical education equipment and facilities.
    • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive interpersonal relationships.

    Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff to support student success.
    • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and school events.
    • Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
    • Serve as a positive role model for students and the school community.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Certification

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
    • Appropriate Michigan endorsement in Health and Physical Education (MC) or other approved endorsements recognized by the Michigan Department of Education.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Physical Education, Health Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field.
    • Experience teaching physical education and/or health at the secondary level.
    • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.
    • Coaching experience preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of adolescent growth, development, and learning.
    • Understanding of physical fitness, wellness, and health education principles.
    • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
    • Ability to use educational technology and student information systems.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to demonstrate physical activities and exercises.
    • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, lift, and participate in physical activities for extended periods.
    • Ability to lift and move physical education equipment as needed.

    Work Environment

    • School classrooms, gymnasiums, fitness facilities, athletic fields, and outdoor instructional settings.
    • Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor activities.

    Compensation

    Salary and benefits shall be determined according to the district's negotiated salary schedule, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and Board of Education policies.
