Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day:

McFarland School District is seeking highly dynamic candidates to fill an opening for a long-term substitute science teacher beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Ideally, our hired candidate would spend the 1st week of school shadowing our teacher going on leave before taking over her classes from approx. Sept. 10th - approx. Dec. 4th. We aspire to hire individuals who can help us work toward our mission of meeting the needs of every learner, every day and our vision of being an equitable and inclusive community committed to student belonging, achievement, and growth.

What Your Day Will Look Like:

A day in the life of this MHS teacher will consist of teaching 3 - 85 min classes each day, with one 85 min prep/planning period. The teacher will also have a daily advisory/homeroom class. In our A/B schedule, this teacher will have one common planning/prep period with their science department colleagues every other day. The teacher will follow the plans of the teacher they are subbing for, but will need to be able to prepare the necessary materials for labs, guide students through scientific concepts, and foster critical thinking with interactive lessons. HERE is a link to the McFarland High School website.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Passion, knowledge and skill in the teaching of the complexities of science, with an ability and the confidence to ignite a passion for science.
  • Commitment to a student-centered approach in instruction through an equity lens;
  • Skill using data to differentiate assessment, curriculum, and instruction;
  • Working knowledge of current best practices in the area of science curriculum and instruction;
  • Knowledge of the NGSS and Wisconsin State Standards and their implications for instruction and student learning;
  • Reflective nature and commitment to professional growth;
  • Skill at teaching using culturally responsive practices;
  • Skill using technology as an instruction tool to enhance learning
  • Commitment to partner with parent/guardians and the skill to do so;
  • Demonstrated practice in developing and teaching lessons based on essential learning outcomes; experience with standard-based grading is preferred;
  • Interest in being a part of a high-achieving, high-energy team in a terrific school

Why People Stay:

Through one-on-one interviews, McFarland teachers say making deep connections with colleagues (including administrators) and students helps them feel supported in McFarland. Teachers who have worked in other districts noted how McFarland class sizes are lower, special education caseloads are smaller, team budgets are larger, and they are glad to work in a community that supports schools, has a positive climate, and a school board that respects teachers. We have a full-time librarian, social worker, school psychologist, and at least one school counselor in each building.

The District:

The McFarland School District stands out as one of the top academic districts in Dane County and Wisconsin, offering a strong educational foundation that families and educators are proud of. With an average enrollment of 2,100 to 2,400 students, McFarland is large enough to provide a comprehensive EC-12 academic and co-curricular program, yet small enough to focus on each student''s unique needs. Known statewide for its welcoming atmosphere and student-centered approach, McFarland consistently attracts top-quality staff who enhance our vibrant, thriving community.
