The High Voltage Electrician specializes in the operation, maintenance, and repair of medium voltage electrical systems (13.8 KV), 480V switchgear, and variable frequency drive (VFD) systems at the EPA-RTP Campus. This is a highly specialized position requiring specific certifications for safe work on high voltage infrastructure.Responsibilities Perform maintenance, inspection, and repair of 13.8 KV medium voltage switchgear and associated equipmentMaintain and repair 480V low voltage unit substations and switchgearPerform cable splicing on 5KV – 35KV electrical systemsOperate, maintain, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) systemsConduct high voltage electrical safety inspections per applicable NFPA and OSHA standardsEnsure that high voltage work is performed in strict compliance with OSHA lockout/tagout and applicable arc flash safety programsCoordinate with the utility interface points at Building E and NCC Switchgear (13.8 kV) per contract crossover responsibilitiesDocument all high voltage maintenance activities and inspections in the CMMSSupport the overall electrical preventive maintenance program for medium voltage systemsRespond to emergency high voltage situations on a 24/7 on-call basisPosition RequirementsMinimum 5 years of experience with 13.8 KV, 480V switchgear, and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) systemsHigh Voltage Certification (required)Cable Splicing Certification for 5KV – 35KV electrical systems (required)Strong understanding of OSHA regulations for high voltage work, including lockout/tagout and arc flash safetyExperience in large commercial or industrial facility high voltage environmentsAbility to read and interpret medium voltage single-line diagrams and related electrical drawings
