The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC), a publicly owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking a High Voltage Electrician. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd.
Position Summary: The High Voltage Electrician is responsible for the installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of electric substations and overhead/underground primary electrical distribution systems used in the treatment of wastewater and the various ancillary and support systems. Will analyze technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings to diagnose the cause of malfunctions and then repair electrical equipment.
Requirements: Must have knowledge of the electrical and electronic principles, procedures, materials, methods, regulatory codes, occupational hazards, and safety standards governing work on electrical systems above 480 volts. Must have knowledge of protective relay circuits, power line carriers (PLC’s) high voltage fiber networks, and related devices designed to operate at high voltage. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and carry out oral and written instructions. Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.

Experience: Either a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible journey-level high voltage electrical experience, completion of a four (4) year approved technical training program in high voltage electrical repair and maintenance along with two (2) years of power distribution experience, or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved working on distribution systems over 480 volts.
License and/or Certifications: Must have a valid New Jersey driver's license.
Education: High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or equivalency certificate.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body such as sitting, standing, climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping, pushing, pulling, and handling heavy objects. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks, as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), in compliance with PVSC’s Facial Hair Grooming Policy.
Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.

The expected base pay range for this position is $97,771 to $122,150. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
