Role Overview:
The Falls City Hoosier Helpers actively patrol two coverage zones. These zones cover all of I-265 (12 miles), 16 miles of I-65, 5 miles of US-31, and 10 miles of I-64. The average zone lane mileage is 21 miles one way or 42 miles round trip which takes about 1 hour to travel. The incumbent will patrol and respond to freeway incidents that disrupt the flow of traffic and render first aid often as a first, first responder on a scene.
The incumbent will also endeavor to detect incidents, verify conditions, and set up traffic control as needed to mitigate flow restricting incidents. The position will also work to insure traffic flow in peak hours, inclement weather, and during special events. The highest priority for this position will be the recovery of restricted travel lanes and shoulders that affect traffic flow. This recovery will reduce secondary crashes, reduce motorist delay, reduce emissions and improve the mobility of freight. The position will assist disabled motorists by diagnosing minor mechanical problems; provide gasoline; change flat tires; and jump start stalled vehicles. Other duties include, pushing stalled vehicles to highway shoulder or exit ramp, report and tag abandoned vehicles for tow by the Indiana State Police. The position provides fundamental first aid to injured motorists as needed. Granting approval to fill this vacant position will provide the needed coverage to aid the response time to lane restricting events, improve recovery time, reduce delays and reduce secondary crashes. The Hoosier Helper Program is a capacity restoring Traffic Management function considered to have a high ROI compared to the cost of building and maintaining additional pavement.
