Job Responsibilities
Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates small equipment such as self-contained sweeper tractor with broom and tractor with ten foot mower in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations, and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges. Assists with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Operates heavier equipment such as a tractor with a 15 foot mower and combination tractor with side-mounted mower. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Operates and maintains small equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of highway and bridge maintenance activities. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Departments most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
