Job Responsibilities
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Operates complex motorized equipment on a county maintenance Work Request Crew. Operates heavy equipment such as motor grader and backhoe, truck-mounted road patchers, crawler dozer, excavators, and slope mower tractors in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Operates other heavy equipment to clean out drainage ditches, install sideline and crossline pipe, driveway installations, and roadside and right-of-way clearing operations.
Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as patching roadway base and surface failures, cleaning ditches, placing sideline and crossline pipe, installing driveways; removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on rights-of-way, performing vegetation management to improve visibility of signage; installing, repairing, and maintaining flat sheet signs, extruded panel signs, sign assemblies, and sign foundations; and setting forms and pouring and finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other activities related to work request activities and multipurpose operations. Conducts safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life.
Operates tandem and single-axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Assists with instructing crew members in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; available for on-call rotations and extended hours or extended shift operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
