Job Responsibilities
Serves as a crew leader coordinating various construction, repair, and preservation activities for roads within Beaufort County. Operates heavy equipment like motor grader, excavator, backhoe, and slope mower. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Ensures that all work performed is recorded in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS). Assists the supervisor to investigate, recommend and/or take corrective action in connection with work requests for drainage, vegetation, surface repairs which are complex in nature. Manage time and equipment effectively in order to accomplish the goals of the unit as well as adjusting scheduled work to include work requests. Responsible for creating and implementing a weekly work schedule. Assists in maintaining 95% utilization of the equipment assigned to crew, as reported in the Department's monthly utilization report. Responsible for verification that daily and monthly equipment maintenance reports are accurately completed and delivered in a timely manner to the shop supervisor and/or RMF. Performs work during inclement weather and emergency operations. May be required to work 12 hour shifts. Assists with on-call and on-call personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Works overtime as necessary.
