Job Summary
Racine County Public Works is a fast-paced, team-focused environment where you'll put your construction and equipment skills to work maintaining the roads, bridges, parks, and facilities our community relies on every day. From smooth summer asphalt to snow-covered winter roads, you'll be right in the middle of it all.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance and repair work on highways, parks, buildings, and facilities.
- Occasionally operate equipment used in highway and park construction and maintenance.
- Plow snow and salt icy roads and parking lots.
- Availability for emergency and after-hours call-outs for diverse weather conditions
- Prepare maintenance and construction grades.
- Perform daily operator maintenance checks and preventative maintenance.
- Move equipment from one project to another.
- Operate spraying equipment.
- Report problems to dispatcher and management and receive instructions via 2-way radio.
- Perform minor repairs on machinery and equipment.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- One (1) year experience involving the operation of machinery, tools, and equipment used in construction and maintenance.
- Valid Wisconsin Class D.
- Class B CDL is preferred.
- Prompt and regular attendance.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to keep accurate daily reports and records.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must attend all mandatory training sessions as directed by supervisor.
- Have or the ability to obtain a Wisconsin Class A commercial driver's license within four months of employment per Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the employee and Racine County.
- Must repay any training costs on a sliding scale as agreed upon by MOU between the employee and Racine County if employment ends prior to 24 months after successful completion of said training.
- Ability to work well and communicate effectively with co-workers, the public and management at all times.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in related maintenance or construction work.
Physical Qualifications
- Continuous (67-100% of workday) hearing, use of far and near vision, light intensity of handling and exerting up to 20 pounds of force with fingers.
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing using legs and arms for support, ascending and descending ladders, balancing, bending/twisting, reaching, feeling and medium intensity handling and fingering and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, crawling, talking and high intensity fingering and exerting up to 100 pounds of force.
Working Conditions
- Continuous (67-100% of workday) exposure to fast moving vehicles and mechanical hazards
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) exposure to the outside with no effective protection from weather, extreme cold, and temperature changes.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) exposure to extreme heat, wet or humid conditions, noise, vibrations, exposure to electrical, chemical, burns, radiation, heights above 12 ft hazards, exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dust, poor ventilation, and physically confined work sites.
Equipment Used
- Hand tools such as hammers, power tools, chainsaw, and shovel/broom, transportation vehicles such as an automobile and 35,000 GVW truck, highway machinery, construction or building maintenance equipment, personal protective equipment such as breathing apparatus, steel tip boots, and hearing and eye protection, tractors, and a 2-way radio.
