Job Responsibilities
THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL (SCHP) OFFICERS ONLY.
This position has Statewide Operations.
The Advanced Team Sergeant's responsibilities are to assist the Training Unit in the coordination, planning, and execution of required training at the basic, in-service, and advanced levels. This will include research, development, and delivery of training in accordance with instructional certification requirements and subject matter expertise.
Serves as the Departments In-Service Coordinator. Responsible for the development and implementation of in-service curriculum, administration and supervision of in-service training, and ensuring all statutory and policy mandated training requirements are met.
Supervises officers in the performance of their duties, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures. Serves as a mentor to instructors and provides direction for proper classroom management and presentation. Provides periodic job performance reviews and counseling to subordinates as appropriate.
Serves as a Law Enforcement Instructor. Instructs classes for Basic, In-Service, and other specialized advanced training. Will obtain and maintain Firearms Instructor, Defensive Driving Instructor, Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor, and Basic Instructor certifications.
Researches, creates, and updatse lesson plans for in-service training and fields within the Patrol Tactics purview for Lesson Plan Development.
Researches new trends, analyzes data and innovative training programs that could enhance training for research, administration, and supervisory purposes. Supervises assigned subordinate personnel.
Investigates traffic collisions, enforces motor vehicle laws, and assists disabled motorists as needed. Assists in other duties as a uniformed traffic officer at specialized assignments as directed. Performs Law Enforcement functions as needed for civil defense, emergency preparedness, and public protection.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements - A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Agency Minimum Requirements - Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements:
TIME IN GRADE - The candidate must possess a minimum of six (6) months of continuous service as a SCHP Corporal by the closing date of this vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - An applicant must have scored 70 or higher on a Promotional Examination for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL - An applicant must have successfully completed a Promotional Interview Panel for the vacancy rank within two (2) years of the closing date of the vacancy.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION - Any individual who is currently serving a suspension for disciplinary reasons or pending the outcome of an investigation shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process. Any individual who has been involuntarily demoted during the preceding six (6) months of the closing of the vacancy shall be considered ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - An individual who has received an "Unsuccessful" rating on the employees most recent performance evaluation or has received a "Performance Improvement Plan" (PIP), formerly known as a "Warning Notice of Substandard Performance," during the 12 months preceding the closing date of this vacancy shall be ineligible to participate in the promotion process.
RESIDENCY - Selected applicant must comply with the residency guidelines outlined in SCDPS Policy #300.47 (Residency Requirements for Commissioned Law Enforcement Officers) within four (4) months of the effective date of the promotion/reassignment. SCDPS Policy #300.47 Section IV. D. 3. Law enforcement personnel assigned to SCDPS Headquarters shall establish a residence within Richland County or at a location that will allow them to respond to Richland County within 60 minutes. IV.C. Troop/Region/Division/Unit Commanders are responsible for determining compliance with this policy and shall approve or deny requests to reside outside of the area of assignment.
Additional Requirements
Must hold a SC Class I Law Enforcement Officer certification. Must be certified in Basic Instructor Development. Must obtain Instructor Certification in Firearms, Driving, and Defensive Tactics within one (1) year from the date of appointment to this position.
Under limited supervision, the employee will be required to make critical decisions requiring sound judgment. The employees guidelines are state and federal laws and departmental policies and procedures.
Additional Comments
Overnight travel required on special assignments and/or response to critical incidents.
May be required to gain and maintain additional certifications, as required.
