Job Title: Phlebotomist II
Job Description
This role provides high-quality phlebotomy and specimen processing services in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. The Phlebotomist performs blood draws and other specimen collections, ensures accurate labeling and handling, supports troubleshooting and workflow improvements, and delivers courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff while complying with all safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established procedures.
- Collect a variety of specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, and ensure they are obtained according to protocol and patient needs.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms or electronic orders to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and patient identification.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining strict adherence to laboratory protocols.
- Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes to preserve specimen integrity.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens securely for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain sample integrity during transit.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain clear, complete documentation of all collections and processing activities.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards in the handling and disposal of specimens and materials.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment where multitasking and time management are essential.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic medical records for updating patient information and reviewing orders.
- Ability to read and accurately communicate laboratory results over the phone when appropriate.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, clinical staff, and colleagues.
- Commitment to ongoing learning, including participation in annual department trainings and updates to procedures and regulations.
- Problem-solving skills to assist with troubleshooting specimen collection or workflow issues and to suggest process improvements.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
