Histology Lab Technician– Check Out

Location: Modesto, CA
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Employment Type: Full-Time | Non-Exempt


Job Description

We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician – Check Out to support the daily assignment, preparation, quality control, tracking, and distribution of pathology cases. This position works with both digital and glass slides, ensuring that cases and associated materials are accurately prepared and delivered to the appropriate pathologists.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, comfortable working with detailed laboratory materials and records, and able to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment. This role requires strong communication skills, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.


Job Responsibilities

  • Perform daily pathology case assignments and prepare cases for distribution to appropriate pathologists.
  • Coordinate case distribution involving both digital and traditional glass slides.
  • Prepare and organize glass slides for delivery to assigned pathologists or designated locations.
  • Perform quality control checks on glass slides and tissue blocks.
  • Identify and correct block and slide labeling discrepancies.
  • Prepare slides for digitization and ensure accurate digital case processing.
  • Operate slide scanning equipment used for digital pathology workflows.
  • Perform routine maintenance on digital slide scanners.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of digitized slides to ensure image quality and completeness.
  • Maintain accurate tracking records for slides and tissue blocks being filed, retrieved, distributed, or sent to other locations.
  • Maintain organized block storage through daily filing and retrieval activities.
  • Retrieve blocks and slides as needed to support pathology workflow.
  • Ensure proper handling and organization of pathology materials throughout the check-out process.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to case assignments and material distribution.
  • Respond professionally to departmental telephone calls and email communications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff and pathologists to support timely case distribution.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures, quality standards, confidentiality requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in a clinical, pathology, histology, or laboratory environment.
  • Experience handling pathology slides and tissue blocks.
  • Familiarity with pathology case assignment and distribution workflows.
  • Experience with digital pathology or slide scanning systems.
  • Experience performing digital slide quality control.
  • Experience operating and performing routine maintenance on slide scanners.
  • Familiarity with block and slide labeling procedures.
  • Experience maintaining specimen, slide, or block tracking records.
  • Basic computer proficiency and comfort working with electronic records and email communications.
