Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Office of Research is seeking to hire a Histology Technician to join our team.

The Histology Technician supports the operation of the Instrumentation Resource Facility by providing high-quality histological specimen processing services for investigators across multiple departments and research programs. This position performs tissue preparation, embedding, sectioning, staining, and related laboratory procedures to support basic, translational, and clinical research. The Histology Technician maintains instrumentation, ensures compliance with quality and safety standards, assists users with experimental planning, and contributes to the efficient operation of a shared research facility.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) by ASCP.
  • Two or more years of experience in a research histology laboratory, pathology laboratory, or shared instrumentation facility.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to perform histological specimen processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. Knowledge of tissue handling, fixation methods, microtomy, cryosectioning, and microscopy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment. Knowledge of of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Histology Services:

  • Receive, accession, and track research specimens from investigators and core facility users.
  • Process biological tissues using manual and automated histology methods, including fixation, dehydration, clearing, paraffin embedding, cryo-embedding, and microtomy.
  • Perform routine and specialized histological staining procedures, including H&E, Masson's Trichrome, and other special stains.
  • Conduct immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), and other tissue-based assays as appropriate.
  • Evaluate tissue sections for quality and troubleshoot specimen preparation issues.

Training & Support

  • Develop and deliver hands-on training for faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and other facility users in histological techniques and instrumentation operation.
  • Assess user competency and authorize independent use of designated equipment following established training and safety requirements.
  • Assist with workshops, seminars, demonstrations, and outreach activities that promote facility services and educate the research community.
  • Assist/provides support with courses taught through the Instrumentation Resource Facility

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Maintain laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations governing laboratory operations.
  • Adhere to biosafety, chemical safety, and occupational health requirements.
  • Participate in accreditation, inspection, and quality improvement activities as applicable.
  • Maintain detailed laboratory records and sample tracking documentation.

Laboratory Maintenance

  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot histology instrumentation, including tissue processors, embedding stations, microtomes, cryostats, slide stainers, coverslippers, and related equipment.
  • Monitor inventories of supplies, reagents, and consumables; initiate purchasing requests as needed.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary laboratories, including the cleaning of equipment
