Summary:
This hybrid posting recruits for either a Histology Technician or Histotechnologist, depending on candidate qualifications and experience. Performs a variety of medical tissue testing and administrative tasks in support of clinical activities. Work involves preparation of tissue samples that enable pathologists to determine cause of death, cause and degree of disease, and course of patient treatment.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares tissue slides by processing, embedding, sectioning, examining, and staining tissues received from surgical pathology, autopsy, hematology, cytology, and research areas.
- Performs routine and specialized histology testing procedures appropriate to role and demonstrated competency.
- Investigates and resolves problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
- Performs quality control activities and routine equipment maintenance.
- Prepares specimens, reagents, and solutions; heats or filters as required.
- Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of reporting and timely correction of errors.
- Reports test results and consults/confers with healthcare providers regarding findings.
- Participates on teams and/or performs special projects or assignments.
- Assists with education and training of Clinical Laboratory Science students, Pathology residents, and new employees, as appropriate to role.
- Serves as a technical resource and works under direction or independently based on experience level.
- Provides leadership and guidance to coworkers, as appropriate to role.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Other Information
Qualifications - Histology Technician
Education:
- Associate's degree in biological, chemical, or related science (with completion of CLIA-required courses), or o Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program
Licensure/Certification:
- HT (ASCP) certified or certification-eligible by the ASCP Board of Certification within one (1) year of hire
Experience
- Associate's degree: One (1) year of relevant laboratory experience required
- NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program: No experience required
Qualifications - Histotechnologist
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Biological Science
Licensure/Certification:
- HTL (ASCP) certified by the ASCP Board of Certification within two (2) years of hire
Experience:
- Bachelor's degree plus completion of a NAACLS-accredited histology program: No experience required
- Bachelor's degree in biological or chemical science: One (1) year of relevant laboratory experience required
