Overview:
Colliers Engineering & Design (CED) is a leading engineering and environmental consulting firm with a growing cultural resources and historic preservation practice dedicated to preserving and interpreting cultural heritage across the United States. We provide comprehensive cultural resource management and historic preservation services across diverse industries and landscapes, including transportation, federal, municipal, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects. Our team is expanding, and we are seeking a full-time Historic Preservation Specialist with strong research, writing, and regulatory experience to support cultural resource and historic preservation projects nationwide.
Responsibilities:
- Support historic preservation and cultural resource projects for federal, state, municipal, and private clients.
- Conduct archival research, historic background investigations, and historic resource evaluations.
- Assist with preparation of technical reports, historic contexts, survey forms, and regulatory documentation.
- Support Section 106 compliance efforts, including coordination with SHPOs, THPOs, and federal agencies.
- Conduct field investigations including historic resource surveys, cemetery documentation, and photographic documentation.
- Assist with development of interpretive signage, story maps, exhibits, and other public outreach materials.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including archaeologists, planners, engineers, GIS specialists, and environmental professionals.
- Support proposal preparation, project coordination, and client communication efforts as needed.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, clients, agencies, and project stakeholders.
- Travel estimated at up to 40% and occasional overnight travel may be required.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 3 to 10 years of professional experience in historic preservation, architectural history, cultural resources management, or a related field.
- Familiarity with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and associated federal and state regulations.
- Experience conducting historic resource surveys, archival research, and technical report preparation.
- Strong technical writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Experience preparing or supporting NRHP evaluations, historic contexts, and effects assessments preferred.
- Experience with interpretive signage, educational materials, exhibits, story maps, or public-facing historic preservation deliverables preferred.
- Experience conducting cemetery surveys, documentation, or burial ground investigations preferred.
- Familiarity with federal agencies such as HUD, FHWA, FEMA, NPS, GSA, or USACE preferred.
- Familiarity with GIS, ArcGIS StoryMaps, Adobe Creative Suite, or related software preferred.
- Experience coordinating with SHPOs, THPOs, municipalities, and multidisciplinary project teams preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
- A valid Driver’s License is required.
Physical Requirements:
This position primarily involves office-based work with periodic fieldwork and travel as needed to support project requirements. Candidates should be able to conduct field investigations in a variety of environmental conditions, walk moderate distances over uneven terrain, and carry field equipment weighing up to 50 pounds when necessary. The role also requires the ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions/Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment with occasional fieldwork, meetings, and travel associated with project coordination and historic resource investigations. Field activities may occur in a variety of outdoor settings and weather conditions depending on project location and scope. Occasional overnight travel may be required to support field investigations, client meetings, agency coordination, or business development activities.
