Position Summary

The Histotechnician will have the primary purpose of performing diagnostic laboratory procedures on tissue specimens obtained from patients with renal diseases. They will be responsible for processing, embedding, sectioning, staining and storage/retrieval of samples for immunofluorescence, light, and electron microscopy. Depending on the needs of the lab, the job duties will include cross-training in all three techniques which include immunofluorescence, light and/or electron microscopy.

The technician will participate in training activities and serve as a technical resource for residents/fellows, graduate students, new staff and other scientists seeking knowledge of histological procedures.

Work will additionally require monitoring equipment, quality control testing, general laboratory maintenance according to UNC-CH, SOM OSHA, and other regulatory bodies, maintaining logs and laboratory operating manuals, supply inventory and appropriately managing laboratory waste. This will include quality improvement activities and health and safety oversight for laboratory microscopy services.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.

Management Preferences

Experience in antigen retrieval methods.
