The Histotechnology Laboratory Instructor reports to the course instructor, Program Head of the Histotechnology Program, and the Dean of the School of Health Sciences. This positions purpose is to provide technical and organizational support for courses with a Histotechnology Laboratory component. Duties include coordinating all laboratories; ordering lab supplies for experiments; maintaining all labs; scheduling lab student workers; and assisting instructors in all labs. The Histotechnology Laboratory Instructor attends all departmental and school meetings and performs other duties assigned within this positions scope deemed necessary to fulfill the mission of the department and the School of Health Sciences.

Essential Duties

Fostering student success through:

  • Teaching laboratory content to align with course and program level outcomes using the assessment measures defined by the School
  • Fostering a laboratory learning environment that maintains respect for diversity among students, including learning styles, and honors the focus on student learning and equity
  • Ensuring that laboratory instruction includes active student engagement, timely and consistent feedback on technical skill performance, and accurate up-to-date record keeping (attendance, competency checklists, grades in Moodle, etc.)
  • Actively participating in completion initiatives

Promoting effective teaching and learning through:

  • Delivering assigned laboratory sessions at VGCC locations and/or clinical affiliate sites as scheduled
  • Demonstrating and supervising technical procedures including tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, and immunohistochemistry
  • Maintaining currency in histotechnology practice and laboratory safety standards through professional development and membership in relevant professional organizations
  • Maintaining, and reporting issues with, laboratory equipment and instructional supplies used during assigned sessions
  • Understanding and using data-informed decision-making related to student competency outcomes

Demonstrating commitment to a relevant and rigorous curriculum by:

  • Participating in the evaluation of laboratory courses as requested
  • Providing input on laboratory equipment, supplies, and instructional materials
  • Obtaining and accurately reporting competency data needed to assess teaching and learning effectiveness
  • Engaging collaboratively with the Program Head and colleagues in assessing course data and implementing improvements
  • Participating in activities necessary to attain and maintain program accreditation from NAACLS, as requested

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in the discipline from an accredited histotechnology program with at least three years of laboratory teaching experience;
  • ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologist) Histology certification or eligible
  • Knowledge of and compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations
  • Familiarity with routine histology procedures and equipment
  • Comfortability embedding both large and small specimen
  • Ability to accurately read all labels and documents
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with laboratory SOPs and safety protocols
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
  • Self-starter with an analytical and collaborative mind-set who can effectively work independently

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and spreadsheet management
  • Experience with and proficiency in Moodle learning management system
  • Exemplary communication skills to work with faculty, students, and staff
  • Desire to teach histotechnology students in all aspects of clinical skills instruction
  • Familiarity with feedback techniques and communication tools to motivate learners
  • Willingness to clearly communicate concerns to the faculty member and work towards resolution
  • Previous experience working independently to identify problems and plan methods and techniques for solving technical or research problems
  • Enthusiasm for supervising students and assessing their work
