    HIV Prevention Specialist - Department of Internal Medicine

    Wayne State University is searching for an experienced HIV Prevention Specialist - Department of Internal Medicine at its Detroit campus location.

    Essential functions (job duties):

    Job Purpose:

    Coordinates the grant funded Human Immunodeficiency Virus test site for the Wayne State University Adult Human Immunodeficiency Virus Program under the direction of the Psychosocial Team Leader. Serves as a patient advocate/non-medical case manager, for the psychosocial team. Reports to Supervisor.

    Essential Functions:

    Serves as a patient advocate/non-medical case manager for the psychosocial team. Enrolls eligible patients and maintains patients in the Ryan White program. Assesses patients for barriers to care such as issues with health insurance, transportation, housing and food insecurity. In collaboration with other members of the psychosocial team, assesses patients for unmet behavioral health needs. Directly assists patients with barriers and/or links patients with formal case management within the Wayne State University Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention program or at community agencies. Provides health education counseling and risk reduction strategies to project participants.

    Documents assessments and advocacy/non-medical case management interventions in the medical record and in the Ryan White reporting system.

    Serves as key contact/liaison HIV testing and other related activities. Obtains testing approval; coordinates and conducts Human Immunodeficiency Virus finger stick testing. Ensures documentation regarding test clients is complete, ensures that documentation of services is included in the medical record for clinic patients, and enters data on test clients and results into the state reporting system.

    Links positive test clients and patients with disease intervention specialists for Partner Services. Prepares counseling, testing and referral supplies, forms, packets and educational materials and coordinates distribution of prevention supplies. Ensures trained Counseling, Testing and Referral staff are educated on new testing procedures and maintains record of staff Counseling, Testing, and Referral certification.

    Maintains certification in Human Immunodeficiency Virus test counseling and performance point of service testing. Maintains knowledge base regarding insurance access and Ryan White policies and procedures regarding non-medical case management, health education and risk reduction, psychosocial support, insurance access and partner services. Participates in ongoing training in counseling skills and cultural sensitivity provided or arranged by the program.

    Organizes and participates with community outreach efforts, special events, and other health promotion initiatives.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Unique duties:

    Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor''s degree

    Bachelor''s degree in public health, psychology, sociology, counseling or related field from an accredited college or university. Two or more years'' experience as a test counselor providing Human Immunodeficiency Virus support services to clients may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor''s degree.

    Experience: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)

    Two or more years experience working in a public health or clinical setting coordinating HIV prevention programs and services. Must obtain state-sponsored Human Immunodeficiency Virus prevention counseling and testing training/certification within 3 months of hire.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Can apply effective interpersonal skills to provide service. Can respond effectively to most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

    Self-Directed and able to make decisions and organize work.

    Can prioritize and plan work activities. Can adapt for changing conditions.

    Ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

    Ability to facilitate training sessions and prepare project site reviews or audits. Ability to provide services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients.

    Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
