Position Description
The Horticulture Crew Leader provides daily leadership and support to the groundskeeping team, ensuring that all park grounds, including landscaped areas, are maintained to exceptional standards throughout the year. This role is responsible for coordinating maintenance tasks, planning and executing seasonal planting and species rotations, monitoring plant health, and ensuring the consistent application of proper horticultural practices.

This position reports to the Park Foreman
Duties and Responsibilities:
In conjunction with the Park Foreman, identify needs and deliver support for park landscaping, horticulture, grounds maintenance and sanitation.
Lead, coordinate, and support groundskeepers in daily park maintenance tasks, ensuring high-quality results.
Plan, schedule, and implement seasonal rotations, plant installations, mulching plans, pruning cycles, and other horticultural activities.
Monitor the health of plant materials, turf, and landscaped areas; identify issues such as pests, disease, or irrigation problems and escalate or address them appropriately.
Train, guide, and mentor crew members in proper horticultural techniques, equipment use, and safety practices.
Coordinate daily work assignments, track progress, and ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Purchase seeds, plants, tools, fertilizers, and other supplies as needed; maintain inventory of materials and equipment.
Operate and maintain landscaping equipment including mowers, trimmers, blowers, irrigation controls, and small hand tools.
Ensure compliance with safety guidelines, including PPE usage, equipment operation, and chemical handling.
Communicate effectively with leadership regarding progress, challenges, resource needs, and upcoming maintenance priorities.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, equipment storage, and supply inventories.
Represents Precinct 4 with professionalism at all times, including assisting constituents and reinforcing park rules as necessary.

Prior experience serving in a lead, senior, or working-lead capacity preferred.
Capable of delegating tasks and conducting quality checks.
Ability to read, understand and complete verbal and written requests and work assignments.
Demonstrated knowledge of horticultural practices including native landscape management, plant production systems, irrigation oversight, and integrated pest management.
Strong plant and pest identification skills; familiarity with native and invasive species preferred.
Ability to safely operate landscaping tools, equipment, and small machinery.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital work order or asset management systems.
Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry materials typically used in grounds maintenance
Ability to work outdoors year-round in varied weather.

Preferences
Strong understanding of horticultural principles including species selection, planting techniques, fertilization, pruning, and pest/disease identification.

Ability to provide hands-on training, mentorship, and constructive feedback to team members.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to troubleshoot common landscaping issues such as irrigation malfunctions, soil deficiencies, and plant health concerns.
Demonstrated commitment to organizational values and creating a positive, collaborative work environment.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus; relevant certifications (e.g., pesticide applicator, irrigation) preferred.
